Default Targa Allocation Advice

Hi Guys,

Going from several Corvettes into my 23 Targa GTS has been an eye-opening experience. The car exceeds every possible expectation. I can say for certainty that I’m not going back. That said, as I bought my Targa used, I do want to build one from scratch with my specs and colors.

Can anybody on the board advise as to some dealers to call to get on lists for allocations? I’m happy to cast a wide net. I would love to pay MSRP, but would even consider products (PPF, warranty) above and beyond. I will not pay a significant ADM. PTS eligibility would be amazing (Yachting Blue!!!), but I’m certainly not counting on that.

The best thing I have found locally (I am outside of New York City) is one dealer who has proposed that I trade in my current Targa for an S Cab that I can either spec or buy one that they have coming in. If I trade in my Targa for that car, they will give me their next Targa allocation at MSRP. But I’d love to see if I can skip a step….

Thanks in advance. Love this board and the people on it.
Bonus Question: Anybody have an update on a Targa 4s being offered?

ive only ever bought new without a trade so i don't have experience with this advice but i have read it since joining rennlist. doing a trade without having the new vehicle can leave you 911'less esp if you don't have a good relationship with the dealer. they're basically saying, trade in your existing car for a spot in line. it's their list and many dealers make adjustments to those lists based on whatever is the best deal. it's possible, again without a good relationship, that others can jump in front, you get moved around, etc. not all but i've def read of some dealers making broken promises to folks after they've traded in. the problem is def present in the gt3 line. good luck.

I wouldn’t be without a 911 because I would be buying an interim car from them. It just would not be a Targa. It would likely be an S Cab. I can buy one they have coming in, or I can spec one. When I take delivery of that car, I go to #1 on the list for a targa at MSRP. The S Cab would be traded for my spec’d targa.

Focus on big dealers. The NYC Metro dealers are big, but also have very high demand because of the income demographic. Look into NJ - Catena, etc.

Find out what they would be willing to give you when you trade the cab back in. While you may not be paying an ADM, there’s a high likelihood that you will be getting less than market for both your current trade and the future cab

You will be paying an ADM when they hose you on those trades twice. Was this at South Shore Porsche by any chance because that place offered to play all kinds of silly games like this when I was looking for a Targa.

There are a few dealers that will not screw you. Call Kyle at Beachwood Porsche in Cleveland Ohio. Tell him I referred you. I have had no less than a dozen rennlist members get MSRP and some PTS but that is not really in their or anyone but Porsche Germanys control. I will also say of all the dealers I have used over the past 20+ years in buying Porsches. Including trading in (considering the tax benefits). I have been super happy.

They also do enclosed delivery.

I have bought my last several from them (I am not local). Could not be happier.

Either way as some suggested. Call around. Nothing wrong with that at all. No reason to pay above MSRP right now. Nor did I that last 3 992s I bought and one was PTS. And most of those were during Covid when the allocations were hard to get at MSRP.

ps. I have 2 local dealers that would not get anywhere close to MSRP.

I’ve gotten a bunch of messages and replies today. And as usual, this board has been quite helpful.

When you say “MSRP” above, are there any mandatory add ons? PPF? Warranty? Etc?

I've actually done something like this in the past. But when I bought the interim car, I had a guaranteed trade-in value. The trade-in value was the amount I paid for the car less a monthly amount that was approximately equal to a lease payment. So the interim car essentially became a short-term lease until the car I really wanted came in.

EDIT: I should add this . . . I too had been driving Targas at the time, but the interim car was a Cab. After driving the Cab for two days, I called the dealer and changed my order for the next car from a Targa to a Cab. I was hooked and I've been driving Cabs ever since.

My dealer I PMd you with (Princeton) asked for ceramic and PPF on my MSRP car. I suspect I could have 'gotten out' of it but didn't try because:

1) I was going to do it anyway.
2) They used a super installer so no concerns re quality.
3) Price was the same as I would have paid at the PPF place directly or maybe a trivial (< $200) amount more.
4) It was the only allocation available for several months among a number of dealers in a 75 mile radius.
5) SA gave me the allocation when I cold called with no purchase history there and was super pleasant and efficient.

At pickup, no uncomfortable pressure on tire and wheel, extended warranty, or the other revenue generating sucker nonsense. I was expecting it but it was super low key. They were very good at reading their audience.

And to boot, I got a $186 check in the mail from the dealer yesterday. I purchased out of state and their actual cost for getting my tags was lower than what was in the contract (already reasonable). Not a big deal, but it reflects well on their business practices.

I got a targa allocation at msrp from Gossett Porsche in Memphis TN a while ago.

Call and ask for Mark Cannon

Gossett has a family owned dealership vibe as opposed to some of the other Porsche massive dealership networks

I was told I needed to do full PPF and Ceramic for $15.995 and Tire & Wheel / Key Replacement for $6175. I have both on my current Targa (PPF from a local shop)...but paid literally half.

Same dealer?
My PPF and ceramic were about $7k (I didn't bother to negotiate) and no wheel/key BS.

To level set the conversation on the latter, I politely told them that if I could write a check for the entire car, I was comfortable self-insuring for a key.
