I was definitely needing gas today and was only able to get 1/4 tank. The pump kept stopping as if the tank was full. Gas attendant said the pump works and possibly my car.

Is this a thing?
It is not a thing from my experience Try another pump.
I've had this happen in my GT3 with the extended range fuel tank but it occurs in the last 1/4 of the tank during refill. It's occasional.
Never top-up your tank in any case, it puts stress on the evaporative emissions system which can easily toss a check engine light. On my car at least, I purposefully short fill the tank by a little. That aside, the first click during the fill-up, stop, don't top off.

i wasn’t topping. I had very little gas left (light just came on) and could only get $8 in when I decided to stop trying to fill when it would click.
Jennifer, after lot's of trial and error on our old 997, I found that turning the nozzle upside down so the trigger in the 1 pm position works the best. I do the same with our new 992. The handle touches or rests against the upper side of the fuel door. Here in Cali we have the rubber evaporative control on the nozzle so it's real sensitive. Good luck!! Mike
Just hold filler handle at 9 o’clock and problem solved . All my recent Porsches have this problem.
I’ve read this before, but personally have never had the issue. I fill up my car with the handle at 6 o’clock just like I do with all cars I drive. Not sure why some need to go to 9 o’clock.
I think the various different outcomes may be because some gas pumps fill at different flow rates. Some may fill at higher flow rates and cause more back flow while others fill slower and don’t cause the flow to shut down earlier. Just a guess.
on a newer vehicle, if you have to position the fuel nozzle at 9 or 12 o clock (vs 6 o clock ) to fill up tank even at different gas stations in your area , there is probably a problem or blockage in the evap system causing transmission of back pressure to the fuel nozzle hose's cut off sensor ...it is common on much older cars as the evap system can wear or get clogged over time
the reason user manuals on all cars recommend against clicking the gas nozzle 1-2 times after it first clicks off is to prevent possible fuel flooding evap reservoir and leading to premature click off of fuel intake
recc having service dept check evap system
