Default Upwards arrow next to gear scale?

While in manual (PDK) in both normal and sport mode a small upwards arrow will display then dissappear. No matter how I shift/drive, it just shows up and goes away. What is it for?

its telling you when to shift (i believe to optimize fuel economy). Happens with manual cars too.

Strange, it'll show up around 1500 RPM's, then go away and show up again around 3000.

Thanks

Depends on how much load is on the engine. If the load is very low it will tell you to shift. It's overly conservative and wants you to bog the engine to save fuel. If you get on the throttle you can make it not show up at all

That is what used to be called the CASIS arrow (Computer Assisted Shift Information System) or at least that's what it was called when it was introduced back in 1984. It was present on my 1984 3.2 Carrera and back then it annoyed me so much that I covered it with a small piece of black electrical tape. As I've become more mellow with age I now just tend to ignore it since, as mentioned by other posters, it is very conservative and not particularly useful.

There is also a downward arrow to tell you to downshift too! The intention is for fuel saving driving, although not sure that applies to 911 owners!

It’s about as useful as 7th gear in the manual. Except you can’t ignore it or (AFAIK) turn it off.
