These cars are low to the ground. I only drive my 911 on cold, clear days in the winter. One reason is to keep it clean and the other reason is that if there's a lot of snow, my car basically turns into a snow plow pushing itself through the deep snow. Again, best to just get some good winter tires, either Michelin Pilot Alpine A5's or studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta, which are better on icy roads than the Michelins.
These are the OEM snow chains. I installed them several times just for practicing if I need them during my winter trips to the North Cape. But I did not need them.
I think they might fit behind the driver seat. I put them on the parcel shelf.

I have a 2017 991.2 4S with rear wheel steering. I am going to take it to the snow this winter.
My question: Do I need chains on all 4 tires, or just the rears?
I have all-season tires (I am considering winter tires also, but most of my driving will be on plowed highway, with snow only in the last 5% of the drive)
Thank you in advance!

Rear only, but if you're driving on California highways in the winter, I would not rely on CalTrans to clear them enough for all season tires on a 911. Plowed does not mean clear. See the discussion on running all seasons in 40 and below temps. We'll see you on the CalTrans' or CHP - Truckee's facebook page..."at least he had heated seats" will be the response.
I assume you are doing a Bay Area to Tahoe run? It's your car, but the cost for a second set of wheels, or just having winter tires put on, is the best insurance beyond actual insurance. I've run Pirelli Scorpion Winters on MB SUVs doing that drive and they work great, even during NorCal mild winters. Swap 'em when the skiing is done. (not recommending that specific tire)
it's always the other guy losing control anyway, minimize your exposure.
