Default PPF quandary

My car is arriving shortly and the dealer can install the xpel ultimate plus. I will also go to a custom shop for radar etc. I suspect they would do a slightly better job with the PPF plus they do paint correction. However, I’m worried that driving the 80 miles from the dealer to the custom shop could result in chips on the paint. What do you think

HA! HA! You are going to "Social Shame" me with your 99 posts, good luck with that. I have immeasurably high doses of Fukitol in my system (you can look that up).

I come from a generation where we took our naked 911's to SCCA events on Saturday mornings and banged them off the redline on the tach in pursuit of FTD, then took our date out on Saturday night and banged her off the back of the seat in our Porsches, all without any "Protection" on the car, seats or her. Chips - stains - road rash - all part of the fun.

Enjoy your PPF'ed, Trailered, Bubble-wrapped, Cars N'Coffee, Ceramic-Coated and whatever else you showboat nannies pay someone to do to your museum pieces.

Could just pay for covered transport to the shop. I plan on doing that when my car comes in this Fall.

You’ll be fine on the drive to the shop. Just stay in the slow lane.

Talk to your PPF installer they can provide you with some scrap pieces to put on the front and behind the wheels to protect for the drive home.

My dealer wanted $5500 to ppf the front end. I declined as my car is not a daily driver. So I drove 600 miles home and maybe had 1 small rock chip. Then I changed my mind and wanted to ppf just the bumpers to guard against parking lot scratches. The shop I found did an amazing job you can barely see the seams. I asked and they only charged $2500 for the front end. I would not trust the dealer to send my car out for a ppf job. If possible ask the dealer not to wash your car so you don’t have to spend more money for paint correction.

If you don’t want any rock chip consider Tracwrap to protect the front end and sides for the drive home.

Options:
  1. Ask your PPF installer. They may already work with a transport company, and you may be able to get a good price through them.
  2. Ask your dealer to transport it for you. They will charge you, but it shouldn’t be that bad, because they do this all the time. I don’t think it would be much more than $500 for 80 miles, but may be as low as $200. Just ask your dealer to give you a price.
  3. You could try to drive it, even putting some temporary protection. As others have noted, you will probably be OK.

I had this same dilemma.
I chose option 2.
Considering the cost of the car, the piece of mind was worth paying for transportation. Also, it was completely painless, because the dealer took care of everything.

Trac Wrap or similar material that dealers lay on your floor carpet - wrap the entire front end and side fenders for the drive to get ppf done. I did this twice on two of our Porsches going 400 miles or so to my trusted ppf guy, no issues. Just make sure to cut openings where your air intakes are on the front bumper so the car breathes

The paint on these cars isn’t perfect. All of them require paint correction. I personally don’t understand this “can’t drive it without PPF” paranoia. You’re much more likely to experience some kind of damage on a transporter than driving it 80 miles.

Drive it there yourself. Don’t follow other cars too closely. It will be fine. There are people who drive these cars without ever putting PPF on them.

Xpel sells temporary PPF, they call it Trac Wrap. You can buy some of that to protect the front end and any other vulnerable spots for the drive to the shop

https://www.xpel.com/products/paint-...-film/tracwrap

You can also use painters tape. That’s what I used on my 911 back when I drove it home.

I will have the same problem when my T arrived in early August, brought it from a dealer that is about 80 kms away, my current plan is to take delivery in the afternoon and then wait until 8 or 9pm then drive it back home on the highway at night hopefully less traffic. I did also considered transport, but wanted to drive the car as soon as taking delivery.

Will get PPF at a local PPF guy, although not sure whether to get whole body or just the front and side. What do you guys think?

I had my entire car PPFd because I live in the AZ desert. Worst place in the US for rock chips. My car has dozens of rock impacts all over the front bumper, plus chips on every other panel including the roof. The PPF has kept the paint underneath protected. I’ve had to replace my windshield twice in one year due to rock impacts immediately cracking my windshield. So for me, it makes sense. Cost me $6000 back in 2022 for the entire car to be done.

'You are in. Miami. Here ya go !! This guy is the BEST , He has done all of my cars for 15 years . Hes a total class act and a perfectionist
Edit . was unable to post his instagram page shoeing his work .

I promise you that you wont be sorry .

Heres an example of his work .

In 2007 when I bought this car Ceramic was not out yet so at that time he did old school clay bar . He is known to car collectors and even does restoration on classic cars .
I did not do the PPF or the ceramic for the first 13 years of my cars life. He convinced me that a paint correction and ceramic would bring this car to life and that wax about 8 years ago. I gave him my old car for two days .
When I showed up to pick it up this is what I saw as he was finishing up. Car is flat black .
