On track, when things are flying by at 100 mph (sometimes literally, but most of the times figuratively), it's an easy visual cue to as to where your steering wheel is positioned.
But poseurs do it because it gives them extra cred at Cars and Coffee, same with the fire extinguisher option.

Thats why you keep your hand at a fixed 9 o'clock and 3'oclock and cross over your arms rather than slide you hands around the wheel
