The one time I forgot to put my car into sport when I drove off, 10 minutes later at a light the auto/stop BS kicked in and turned the car off. I was so annoyed by it, I haven't forgotten since.

I can't speak for the 911, but on my Lexus - start/stop only works with the gearbox in Drive. In Park, you can idle all day. And I really think that is the correct operation.
