I believe if you click or tap on the rectangle, it will take you to the first new post since you last read the thread.
(If there aren’t enough posts to fill a “page”, then you are taken to the top of the page).

When you click on a thread you have already viewed you should see a box at the top of the thread that says - “go to first unread”. This will take you to the spot you left off.
I have noticed this over the years on this site as well (none of the other sites - they all work - like I think the OP and I kindof expect).
When on FerrariChat or other - if you click on the title of a thread you have seen before, it will take you to the exact page and post of where you left off - no doing anything else at all.
On Rennlist, I have been just remembering if I have seen it, and going to the last page and figuring out where I might have left off. Not a huge deal, but harder the more pages there are - or if you go several days without checking in.
I have to believe it is a forum admin level setting, as I see nothing in my settings that can change that behavior...

exactly and there is as well this annoying jump back to previous pages once you scroll down. I never understood this feature
