Who is Happy With Their Light Weight Glass?
#16
Seems there are a few reports of spidering with LWG, and apparently none so far with regular glass.
Funny how everyone here has a defensive stance saying noise is ok etc; nobody has mentioned better handling or better engine noise in the cabin. QED.
With regards to the former, saving 20lbs, even high up, won’t change a thing.
in summary and based on LWG owners so far; there’s an increased risk of spidering, more noise in the cabin (particularly tyre, perhaps engine too although no one has mentioned it), and no tangible benefit on handling. Not a glowing endorsement

I have the lightweight glass on my Carrera S and so far no issues in 1k miles. I know it’s still early. I added it specifically because I also added the Burmester and wanted a quieter cabin to listen to music on long trips. I can’t compare it to a car without the glass, but my daughter did confirm for me how well it works. One day she got into the car and told me how loud the car is. Once she closed the door she couldn’t believe how quiet it was. Now it’s not quiet like an EV and you can still hear the engine sounds and PSE. But based on her comment, I’d say it does work.
I’ve read the recent issues with the glass. Knowing that I may hesitate putting it in, however, I also realize any issues discussed here are a small subset of the total number of vehicles.
I also tinted all the windows. I informed the installer I had the lightweight glass and he said they have no issues installing on lightweight glass.

I've got a 992T that has had two driver's side window failures in 3 months and am currently waiting for glass replacement #2 to arrive at the dealer (who has been great). I can't compare as I have no experience with a 911 having normal glass so no comparisons for its noise control properties can be made. Having gone through this twice now I'd be reluctant to ever purposely order this glass on a future P car.

I have a T, so LWG was standard and non-delectable. That said, no issues in ~2K miles, including a track day and a couple of long highway road trips. I've not driven a non-LWG 992 in order to compare sound. However, the T is considerably quieter than my old 997.2 was. All in all, other than the intake and exhaust noises in Sport mode (which I think are piped in somehow), the T is really a pretty quiet car despite the supposedly reduced sound deadening. Less wind and road noise than both my family SUV and my GTI daily driver at highway speeds (both of which are made noisier by ski/bike racks).

First time the car was stationary for at least 23 hours when it happened. I walked by it and got in another vehicle to run uptown quickly and returned 10 minutes later to see the window as pictured. No outside event and service mgr opined that perhaps the factory installed the glass improperly. The second time which was 8 days ago. I opened the door and reached over to get my phone out of the center console when I heard a faint "pop." I looked at the window and it looked like the second picture. Waiting to hear from the dealer as to when it's getting replaced as the glass just arrived there.

2023 Carrera T driven 3500 miles
I got one “chip” on my windshield from a softball sized debris hitting it on the highway. It hasn’t changed in size and no other issues. I got my vehicle tinted by a reputable place without issues as well.
but, I wouldn’t option it just to save the hassle of potential repairs.

I’d order the lightweight glass option again, for sure. Makes longer road trips much more tolerable.

No issues here after 6000 miles and 18 months on my 2022 4S. I did not get to test drive one without the LWG so no baseline for comparison; my car is reasonably quiet. I do hear the tire noise especially on the highway. Surprisingly, my winter tires make the car quieter on the highway. Based on my experience, I would order LWG again.

Car goes in today for glass replacement #2, I'll have to see what they say.
