Default Tire balance after wheel powder coat

Finally got the car to the shop to powder coat GTS RS Spyders (I hate black wheels). Finished in Prismatic Powders Porsche Silver which does a much better job of showing the wheel design and sets off the Gentian Blue perfectly. (I know, opinions vary.) Pics to come.

The shop is 240 miles away from home, but near the dealer from whom I purchased the car. The shop has a great rep, they did my PPF and ceramic .... but.

The powder job is excellent, but a problem on the way home, I started getting a vibration in the steering wheel above 65MPH. It comes and goes from almost imperceptible to slightly visible (you can see the wheel shake slightly) to definitely noticeable feeling the vibration from the wheel. Car tracks straight, so it appears to be the result of "close enough" dynamic balance vice perfect. Interestingly, after a bend in the road (outside wheel rotates at a slightly different rate than inside) the phenomenon varies ... "It's gone!" then "It's back."

I'll check tire pressures to factory spec and will likely make an appointment with closer Porsche dealer for tire/wheel balance. Oh, and they didn't return my anti-theft wheel lock adapter. I didn't spec them on my build, but like grits with breakfast in the south, they just came. Hoping they haven't lost the doggone thing and can return it, or the dealer has his own adapters. Otherwise I've got a problem, Houston.

I assume they took the wheel weights off the wheel to powder coat it... I would verify with them they rebalanced the wheels when they were reinstalled

Yeah, who knows how well they balanced the wheels after remounting the tires. Balancing equipment and technician attention to detail vary quite a bit. I have my favorite shops (not necessarily dealers) that I trust to do it right.

Also, I want to commend you on your wheel color taste. I hate black wheels and the two times I’ve bought a car with black wheels - I immediately swapped or repainted them to silver.

I assume you did this, but did you check the frunk to see if the wheel bolt lock is sitting in the area on the right next to the tire repair kit?

Also, definitely get the rims re-balanced. Tire shops can make mistakes or just do a sloppy job and I have had to take my car back to get tires re-balanced immediately after replacing or patching. It always comes back perfect b/c the person doing the job the 2nd time is paying more attention.

Funny, I am planning on powder coating my RS Spyder wheels that are currently gray to black. Looking for more contrast on my agate gray CS.

Definitely get them rebalanced just to be safe.

I have the same color combo (Gentian blue with black RS Spyder - hates black wheel but love the Spyder wheel design) and want to change wheel color and am deciding between Prismatic Porsche Silver and Polar White. Can you post some photos of your car to help me decide?

Thank you.

@m732sg: I'm in the same boat as the OP - I hate the black wheels on my GTS. I am going to purchase new Platinum Gray RS Spyders and then sell the black. PM me if a swap could be discussed.

How do you like the Prismatic color? I did a set of Turbo Twists in Porsche Silver and the pearl/metallic finish had kind of a weird wavy quality to it. The color also had a very gray tone.

No, they forgot to replace it. I put in the cupholder to make it handy, checked everywhere including the glove box. They just screwed up.

No, they look great. Even the shop guys who love black thought it was an improvement. I'll post photos as soon as I get an opportunity.

@F8Driver
How much did it cost you if you dont mind sharing.

I am in same boat as you. Hate the black wheels. Getting GB Cab in Jan. Plan is to swap the centerlock Turbos (standard on GTS) with GT3 wheels (SIlver).
Or powdercoat silver.
