Default OBD2 Scanner Recommendation for a 992

Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheap OBD2 reader that you’ve used successfully on your 992?

I’m running a set of FabSpeed sport cats and their Maxflo Valvetronic exhaust on my 2021 C2S. They advertise no CEL. However, I get a CEL about every 1.5 months. It lasts for about 4 days and goes away.

FabSpeed wants to know what the trouble codes are in order to determine what needs to be done to resolve the issue.

My stealer wants to charge me $225 🙄.

I’m sure I can do it for much less by buying my own scanner.

Thank you.

Probably overkill what you are looking for, but others (including myself) in the ODBII section of the 992 forum have bought this.

Amazon Amazon

Not only does it read, it also resets service lights which a 200 dollar one will not (AKA doing your own oil change - you can reset the service interval light, etc.). Thus more advanced read-write is needed. I am sure a basic ODBII reader will pull the code you are looking for (may not translate it) but should read the fault.

PS - I think Autozone or Nappa or the like will hook theirs up for free and give you the code you are throwing if you just need it one time...

I threw a check engine light last night pulling the car from storage. My friend gave me an ODB2 scanner - will any of them work? I don't need to reset - I just want to know the issue.

I believe most will read the code..

PS. If in storage for a while, it will likely throw some codes, just restart and drive a while - probably will just self correct...

You need a few "drive cycles" without the fault present for it to reset on its own - just starting and stopping the engine a few times won't do it, the trip has to be longer than just around the block.

Anyone have any recent recommendations for a cheap OBD scanner? Just looking to scan and maybe clear right now. I have an Autel AP200 but it seems that is not compatible with the 992.

I use iCarsoft POR3.0 - $179, and it can read and reset codes, oil change, airbag light, it can calibrate/initiliaze including windows and light sensors etc... and a lot more I will never need.

Do you know if it will work on a 992.2?

I would think so, but ask them to be sure. The “POR” versions of these readers are made specifically to work with Porsches. It’s a pretty low cost, nifty tool.

Discovered my old Foxwell will not update the 992.1 T maintenance services. Additionally, have been reading that personal scanners may not work on all 992.1 and 992.2 models as Porsche is locking this down. This led me to email Autel and ask for guidance on the best scanner for resetting oil and brake fluid services. They wrote back the next day recommending the Autel MaxiCOM MK808BT Pro. Their response included a $100 off coupon. Two days later it arrived at my door.

I can share the MK808BT works great on my cars! One thing to note is all updates and downloads are free for the first year. After this, a subscription fee is required if you add a newer car or need updated mapping.

Hope this is helpful.

I had an Autel MK808S. It has a new owner.
