Default Shuddering and then Reduced Engine Power Light

Hey everyone,

So after 20 months and 13,000 perfect miles, I was cruising in traffic on the highway at 40mph. Road ahead cleared so I accelerated 1/4 throttle and suddenly the car shuddered and didn’t accelerate and immediately the Reduced power, driving permitted light came on. I was able to finish my drive to work at normal highway speeds but slower acceleration, which was another 10 miles.

I was in Sport Auto at the time so I’m assuming instead of downshifting it started shuddering. Lunch time and evening drive home and driving around all day today was just as normal without any light on.

Any idea what this was? Transmission? I’m in Sport manual 90% of the time and have never had any issues previously in any modes.

My 2 yr service is due in January so I may hold off taking the car in until then as it seems to be driving fine again. Though I did have a random PAS error light today for 5 minutes when leaving my garage.

PDK? or MT?

If PDK, it might be a transmission error.

If MT (or even PDK), might be an engine issue.

Bright side is you're no doubt still under OEM warranty, right?

Do you have a code reader?

2021 Carrera S PDK and Not tuned, thankfully. Completely stock. Hopefully whatever error it was saved to the computer.

I just got a Veepeak in anticipation of installing sport cats at some point in the near future in case they throw a CEL. So would there be any codes I could read now if I hook it up? I can buy the OBD fusion app.

This code hasn’t come on again so there are no messages on the dash.

I'm not familiar with that code reader specifically, but codes usually stick around in a "Pending" state until manually cleared so there should be something to see. Avoid clearing it so the dealer can see it as well.

Well this is a fail. Tried obd fusion and car scanner and both detect the Veepeak but can’t detect the protocol so won’t connect to the car. Tried it on my Honda CR-V and it synced right up. Do I need a specific app for the 992? Or a different device?

Edit: it looks like the way the Veepeak is going in, the blue light won’t stay on all the time except at some specific angle which is not all the way pushed in. It might be getting power (light is on) but not being pushed in means it’s not connected to the car properly. I will return it and I just ordered a different dongle off Amazon.

let the dealer fiddle with it. Keep us posted.
Btw, don't drive it to the dealer, call 1-800 and have a flatbed take it there. If there's any risk of engine damage it will get worse by running the car.

This happened to me when I did the PECLA thingy in the S. Because it was there they swapped me into a new car for the rest of the session. Good luck.

The thing is, the message on his dash disappeared. Makes one think that maybe it was just a temporary problem. Not that it doesn’t need to be looked into, but I’m not sure that it really needs to be flatbedded

I got this error on my (new to me) 981 Boxster S when I was trying to learn how to use launch control. I drove it slowly after that until I could shut it down and let it rest. After that the error went away and I never got it again, even when using launch control.

I think it sensed some kind of error and placed the car into a safe mode of sorts... As others have said it shouldn't be an issue but ask them to look at it when you bring it in for servicing.

These heavily computerized systems in modern Porsche are all a bit *****. I have three newer Porsches a 2020 and (2) 2021's. They all do whacky stuff on warnings and every single one is solved with a reboot of the system, which is basically turning the car off and letting the CANBUS go off (about 3 minutes after key off). Then restarting. I chalk them all up to electrical farts and there is no need to run to the dealer to get it looked at. Unless it comes on a second and third time after a 5 minute key-off, then don't worry about it.

Got it, makes sense.
I would take it to the dealer bc they'll use anything as an excuse not to cover repairs under warranty.

Alright thanks guys. This was just the first mechanical fault so wanted to check. Car has been driving fine with 0 issues since. I’ll still try to pull any codes and post them here if the scanner coming on Sunday (Bafx) plugs in correctly.
