Default Engine Idling

I picked my car up from my OPC after a warranty repair (window motor replacement) and I noticed on the Porsche Connect app they left my car idling for 2 hours 40mins…

I always thought you should never let a car idle for too long from cold as it can damage the engine.

Probably me being paranoid, but do I need to worry at all about this? I’m assuming this is a one off.

Car has done 5.5k miles.

I see no reason for them to leave it idling since it was in for a window motor change.

They need the car to be running while they set up all the PCM and electronics or it will kill the battery.

It was in for a warranty repair, window motor needed replacing. No PCM to set-up.

The reason I’m questioning this is because I’ve had absolutely dreadful service at this particular OPC it was my 4th time in with them within 2 months and I have to go in again because they’ve now curbed my driver side wheel, I suspect this happened when they took my car out for a 9 mile drive… again it was just a window motor change so no reason for them to drive it for 9 miles and certainly no reason for it to idle for 2 hours 40mins which is why I’m questioning it and any adverse effects to the engine because of this.

Can you explain this logic? Taxis, police cars and other service vehicles idle for long periods of time and are driven several hundred thousand miles in their service life. I always read the opposite that running an engine long periods helps keep internal debris like carbon and water from ethanol to a minimum by burning it off.

Idling the car is not great simply because of the increased wear, but a few hours is practically irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. You probably spend hours idling at red lights per year.

That said, taking the car for a 9 mile cruise isn't appropriate when it's in for a window motor repair, and they should repair the wheel to your satisfaction or replace it.
