Default At What Point is a VIN Assignedf?

I am wondering at what point in the process a VIN is assigned to a new car?

I received an allocation for a PTS C2S on February 2nd. Change freeze point reached on 6/7 and the car has been scheduled to begin production on 7/15 for some time now. TYD remained at "Order Created" until last week when it moved to "Scheduled for Production". Current status is "Pre-Production. Actual "Start Production" is still showing 7/15, with the car complete and CP8.0 on 7/29 and delivery on 9/2. My dates have held relatively steady for at least 6-8 weeks.

I spoke to my SA over the weekend, recognizing that TYD is notoriously imprecise, and his dealer system shows the same as TYD. Still only showing scheduled for production to begin on 7/15; code is V250. However, he did tell me that he knew P had all the parts for my car (I don't know how he knew this) and the car had been assigned a VIN. This surprised me as I would have thought that a car would need to be well into the build process, if not complete, before a VIN would be assigned. Also surprising that the dates have not updated at all in his dealer system.

SA did say that PTS always takes longer in production and that it is not unusual for their dealer system to suddenly update with news that production started a few days previously and it is now well underway. He assured me that my car would be a MY 2022 car, which makes sense if I have a VIN. I asked him about the factory's schedule for August, as I thought they typically shut down for most of August for vacation and to prepare for the new MY cars. He said he thought they maintained some sort of "skeleton crew" and continued through August. I thought they might work through August this year, but I did see that the new VW CEO, Oliver Blume former PAG CEO, told his workers recently on taking his new job to enjoy their upcoming vacation. I also asked about recent allocations for 911s and he said they have received very few this year.

Seems like with everything from supply chain issues to war in Ukraine to replacing cars from the Felicity Ace to strike at Emden, P will have considerable difficulty managing to accommodate all of their orders in any kind of a timely fashion.

The VIN is the “code” that identifies exactly how the vehicle will be built - so it exists prior to assembly taking place.

As soon as the “frame” starts the assembly process of a car the VIN is attached to that frame. From that point on the vehicle is unique.

I’ve visited 3 assembly plants and the pre assigned VIN gets physically attached very early in the process.

Does that mean that production of my car has likely started?

Most likely or about to in a day or two. My VIN was available online about 7 days prior to the build date.

Thanks very much for the replies. Probably that's the reason my SA was certain that P had all of the parts for my car. Interestingly, TYD does not show the VIN yet, only the commission number.

Exciting but just another step in a long journey until delivery.

It is exciting. Enjoy the journey. The VIN doesn't show up on TYD. It was another link on the app. Try using the computer instead of cell phone and go to my porsche site and see if you click here and there to get more info about the vehicle.

On the app, I think I went to profile and my vehicle or something like that.
