Good thread, thanks. I was initially leaving my cab's top down in the garage, without realizing the potential creasing issue. I am now leaving the top up in the garage, as it is no big deal to do so and will reduce the risk of creasing.
And it's particularly no sweat if you have the Smarttop installed--which I love and is a must-have if you have a manual as it makes the top and windstop buttons one touch.
I leave the top down if I’m running into a store for a few minutes, otherwise the top goes up. My biggest worry is rain; many years ago I stupidly left the top down in my 89 325 while watching a movie, because it was a beautiful clear day. Came out to a just-starting downpour, so no serious damage. But I’ll never make that mistake again. If I’m parked under a tree, the top goes up. If I’m in a sketchy neighborhood, the top goes up.
My 997 cab got bombed by what must have been a flying dinosaur; I’ve never seen so much poop in one place. Fortunately, the top was up.
As for the garage, I’m more concerned about dirt settling in the car with the top down than wrinkles in the top. That being said I regularly left the 325 (10 years) and 997 (15 years) tops down for a day or two in season with no noticeable creasing. The 325 was a manual top, which gave me more incentive to do so. I’ll probably continue the practice with my 992.
