Default Selling Car to Dealer

Hello All,

Looking for some advice. I am contemplating selling my well optioned 2021 911 base coupe with under 2k miles. I reached out to my dealer thinking I would get a reasonable offer given market conditions. As background a neighboring dealer is selling a similar specked and year car as mine and is asking for 20% over original msrp, yet my dealer only offered me 5% under msrp. I felt a bit insulted by the offer as I didn’t think the spreads would be so extreme. Does this seem reasonable to you from what you are seeing or maybe suggest another Avenue of selling? The car is metallic black has the black leather with chalk stitching package, 14 ways, LKA, SC, PSE, Bose, glass sunroof and carrera s wheels. Thanks for you insights.

I would imagine your neighbor is doing a private party sale?

If so, comparing your price quote from a dealer is simply inapt.

A dealer transaction is basically turnkey, with instant gratification. You walk in, hand over car and title, agree on price, and boom, you get the money. All DMV paperwork is taken care of.

Private party? Not so much. Tire kickers? Yes. PPI? But of course. Test drive? Sure, why not. DMV paperwork? Have fun standing in line. Payment? You take bitcoin?

All of that explains the price difference. Be happy that you essentially got to drive your car for free for 1.5 years at a 5% reduction from MSRP is basically a rounding error at this point.

I am not the smartest guy, but why not go to the dealer with the higher priced car?

I think dealer margin on invoice from factory is roughly 10%. So, if dealer offers you 5 below MSRP, it means they are offering to buy your car at about 5% more than they can buy a new from Porsche for. The only reason they would do that is that can’t get enough new cars. They make money on volume, moving lots of cars. If there’s fewer cars, they need to make more per car. If they make 10% in normal times , they need to make a bit more per car to compensate for lack of volume. I don’t think the offer is crazy low. If you are just giving them the car and not getting an allocation for a new one in return, maybe they would be willing to sell your car on a consignment for a commission percentage.

I’m in Canada, I just sold my 2021 4S (6000km) back to my dealer at Msrp 2 weeks ago. They in turn sold it for $30,000 or 18% above msrp within 2 days of listing.

overall, the amount of $ I lost on the car was the costs of ppf and tinting at $2500 Cdn

You shouldn't feel insulted. That's a very reasonable offer. The dealer needs to make money on the transaction and there are costs associated with CPO, marketing, and other prep. If you were trading it in to get something else, they might give you a slightly better offer as a trade, because they can make money on both ends. It's remarkable that we live in a time where dealers just buy these cars.

If you paid MSRP here, your 2,000 miles probably cost you somewhere around $3/mile. If you paid below MSRP, you did a little better than that.
If you paid any ADM, always assume that you're never going to see the ADM back -- that's out the window money. You should never expect that back on trade.

I paid below MSRP for my very nicely optioned 2020 C4S new in 2019. I drove it over 35k miles over 2.5 years.
At trade in, I did great. Each mile cost me about $0.30/mile when I look at what I paid for the car new. Bangin' deal.
Drive your cars, because the mileage doesn't have as much impact on depreciation as some people think.

Alternatives to trade-in/dealer buy
  • Private sale? How much is your time worth? Are you comfortable waiting on some wire from a stranger? If you don't have experience selling pricier used cars, I wouldn't start with a 992.
  • Consignment? You'll be paying a commission here and in the end, probably end up pretty close to your dealer offer, if you are lucky.
  • Carvana/Vroom, etc? Most don't play in the six figure car space.

Bangin' deal!
Also, a 4S is more desirable than a base.

You should try a few other dealers - MSRP isn’t an insane expectation in this market.

I sold my X7 M50 to Givemethevin last year. Would recommend them as well - transaction was very smooth/simple and they clearly do deals in the 6 figure space.

From the research I did last year Carvana and Autonation aren’t bad options either - I quoted with them (givemethevin just had the best offer but they were all pretty reasonable). I avoided Vroom mainly due to reading some nightmare stories on other forums about Vroom customer service when the transaction has even the slightest hiccup but maybe that was overblown? The good thing is that it’s pretty easy to get quotes from all of these places.

Have you considered listing it on Bring a Trailer or a similar service. They make a private sale pretty easy.

Can't figure out the logic as to how bringing a differently speced car to the dealer will help. What am I missing?

The dealerships are independent franchises. Some have better marketing than others, better Rolodex of customers, what have you.

Why would you only go to one dealer to sell your car when the other is seemingly paying more? It doesn’t cost you anything to go get an offer.

I thought you meant take the higher priced car to the same dealer based upon your statement. Thanks

and tax, no? That’s a significant amount here in BC.

Did you negotiate for a better price? When I sold my 991 back last year I told them what I wanted, they in turn told me what they wanted to pay. We met in the middle.

yes trade in also negates the tax on that amount so assume 5-7% higher than they are quoting you depending on your location
