What is your take why some people prefer the base engine vs the S/GTS?
If it's just a matter of making the S engine HP/TQ curve look like the base engine's would there be any other differences when driving them?

Perhaps this person is just pranking everyone here. His user name, "nonce," is slang in UK for pedophile. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nonce. It's an acronym for "not on normal courtyard exercise" due to the fact that a sex offender is segregated from other prison inmates.
The word has now used more generally in the UK as synonymous with "idiot."
I really think this person is trolling us all.

The definition of nonce in the US refers to an arbitrary number that should be used just once in a cryptographic communication. Albeit I have since learned about the UK definition and feel I should have done more research before picking this name.

This is your flawed premise. While many people find the base engine sufficient would not spend the extra money for the S, I don't think it is generally a true statement that "some people prefer the base engine".

Great point! Judging by the strong responses to this post I would venture to say that you are correct.

You could detune your S into a base Carrera, sell it for less, incur a loss, and write off the loss in your tax returns.
That's probably the only reason I could think of for detuning your car.

The base makes considerably less torque than the S and the S does it right at the start of the rev range. At around 2500RPM, the S makes more torque than the base engine ever makes.
You don’t see that when you just look at the peak numbers. The S cars feel faster everywhere and the GTS is just a little more of that.
The engine and turbos in the Base 992 aren’t a bad setup, but the nonsense peddled about more responsive turbos is just that… nonsense. While it’s not a slow car, the Base feels slower everywhere compared to the S, more so than the difference in peak numbers would indicate.
The Base 992 is no Miata. It’s not more of a driver’s car for making less power. It’s still arguably too fast for public roads.
People put the Carrera T on a pedestal, but it’s not there because it has the Base engine. It has that status for being an affordable entry point for some performance features unrelated to the engine bay.
