Not sure if this is still true, but about 10 years ago I was sitting next to a Google engineer on a flight. He told me Google maps gets its travel time data from the millions of Android phones out there on the road.
It would make sense; I'm sure waze still does something similar since they crowdsource everything. I don't trust google to track me so I don't use any of their mapping tools. The time estimations apple maps comes up with are close enough.

Well, Waze was acquired by Google in 2013. Waze also uses and sells your usage data in the same way Google does. Apple Maps lacks the crowd sourcing police recognition. For me that is the only reason why I still use Waze over Apple Maps.

Yes, I was including waze in the group of google's "mapping tools". It's not just selling usage data - they can draw a pretty accurate map of the daily path of many of their users that didn't bother to turn off location tracking or are running waze in the background.

Pretty much any phone running google maps is sharing its location with Google, according to Google’s privacy policy. Unless of course, you have deliberately turned off that sort of sharing.
Many things we now take for granted, like accurate travel times, are due to privacy trade-offs like this.
does the HomeKit garage door open/close menu actually pop up when you're near the home, or do you have to swipe the carplay home screen to access those controls?
Yes pops up the screen assuming I have the multi view screen on CarPlay up.
Once on a three vehicle road trip with a total of six guys (hunting trip), we burned through more time and had more fun making Siri a foul mouthed sailor. Call it potty humor, but man we had a blast and burned through about 4 hours of drive time without even recognizing it.
