Default Stargard

Did anyone else find a Stargard GPS device installed on their new 992?

When I was installing the battery charger leads on my battery I noticed an odd black box zip-tied to a bracket. Two wires from this black box were connected directly to the battery plus and minus terminals. I cut the zip tie, removed the two wires and discovered the name Stargard on the under side of the box. Evidently it's a tracking device to enable you to locate your car in the event it gets stolen. Presumably there is a fee associated with this service but I was never advised of the service or cost when signing final docs at the dealership. So I was just curious if anyone else has this Stargard GPS device installed and if so, is it active and were you charged a fee for the service?

Your dealer forgot to remove it. Dealers use the device to track the cars in their inventory. If you have a good relationship with your dealer, remove it and give it back to them and they’ll probably reuse it. That said, if you don’t have that relationship, these devices are quite inexpensive, so you could just toss it as well.

Ok, thank you for the explanation!

It seems odd that the dealer would install such a device when my vehicle was there for only a day or two for make-ready before I picked it up.

Cars that are leased or financed sometimes have these installed so they can be tracked and repossessed more easily. I bought a pre-owned BMW that had one on it. Removed and tossed it.

It would have been there from when you purchased the car.

My dealer said he installed it on every new car and charges $95 for it. I live in a condo and park 1 floor underground. I noticed that my car would not automatically unlock when I approached it in the garage but works when outside. When I had the Smart Top unit installed I mentioned that to the installer. He said that the GPS type units ramp up the power until they can get a signal and when Stargard increased it's signal in the garage it over rode the unlocking signal. I had the dealer take Stargard off and return my $95 and everything works normal. As some have said if someone steals my car I really don't want it back and would rather have insurance replace the car even if it cost extra money. I had a car stolen years ago and when I got it back it had been wrecked and was never the same after I fixed it. I traded it in after 6 months.

Keep in mind that the car has this capability built in without the stargard unit. It is entirely redundant once you take ownership, beyond letting the dealer track you.
