Does anyone know of any how-to's on removing/dismantling the center console? I have an annoying rattle emanating from somewhere in there (near the gear shifter/climate control levers), and I'd like to have a look inside to see if I can silence it. Thanks.

 

I recently sat down to relax when your post came through. Just my opinion, but your 992 is under warranty. I certainly do not know your circumstances, but would consider being cautious with taking apart and reassembling.

 

I would assume the car is still under warranty, I think you would be very foolish to attempt any kind of repair yourself.

 

So frustrating. These worthless personal opinion responses. So sick of these.

 

Check out post #8 here...with console trim pieces removed (easy with standard trim removal tools), screws holding the console in place are visible. Should be an easy process to check for loose parts/rattles.

On my second 992. First one went to dealer for annoying door rattle, five months later car totally replaced. Long story but dealership and Porsche were terrific. Six weeks ago I got my second 992. It had a door creaking noise in passenger door and a very interesting speaker rattle that increased/decreased with engine RPMs.

I fixed both myself!!!! Lessons learned.

 

Just an idea: I had an annoying rattle around the sport chrono dial in my 981. The dealer tried to fix it, but couldn’t. I asked him for an exploded view (I couldn’t find one myself) to help me visualize where the sound could be coming from. He thought that was a good idea and gave me the diagrams. We eventually solved it together. Even if you do it yourself, diagrams will probably show you where the clips are. I suggest you ask your dealer. Also, you’ll probably think this is dumb, but I’ve had rattles that I swore were coming from a specific location, but it turned out the source was someplace completely different. I’d suggest you empty everything from the glovebox, the side pockets, etc (everything) just to make sure it’s not actually emanating from someplace else before you start tearing it open. Great advice, both my rattles were found by my wife as passenger, totally different to where I thought they were.

 

Which reminds me that I would greatly appreciate a workshop manual. It really irks me that Porsche holds this information so close to their vest.

Great suggestion on asking for exploded view. I had my wife drive me around for like an hour the other day while I crawled around the cabin, placing my ear right next to every part I thought the noise was coming from. Prior to doing so, I was convinced it was coming from the top of the dash near the SC dial. Nope. It is definitely coming from inside the center console, basically underneath the climate control switch area.

 

Thanks, guys. The trim pieces were fairly easy to remove. I found the source of my rattle. It’s the module that houses the climate control levers and volume *****—it appears it’s just not a perfect fit and it vibrates against its mount and/or other trim pieces that contact it. I’m going to try to fashion some sort of foam insert to isolate the module a bit from its neighbors.

Anyway, here are a couple pics of the console with the trim pieces removed in case anyone was curious as to what’s under there.

 

From what end did you start prying? Alas my rattle is on the front and below the windshield...

I started with the cupholder surround. That’s just a press fit—lifts from the back with a trim tool and slides right out. The seat ventilation button surrounds, I started from the sides and then lifted the rear—it has more traditional plastic tabs (and they’re small) so a little finesse is good here. The piano black trim pieces were a bit easier—you can see the tab locations (4 each side) clearly in the pics—I lifted the front outside tabs first and then the rear outside, and once those popped loose the whole thing just comes right out. To get the climate control lever/volume **** module out, you have to remove two T25’s (one per side), the locations of which can be seen in the pic if you look closely, and once you’ve done that, there is a single tab on the outside edge of each that easily pops loose with a trim tool.
