I have a general idea of how the system works, but would be interested to see a system overview with basic info, eg: weight, component locations, fluid type etc.

It depends on what you want to ford or drive over. There's little engine protection keeping in mind this is not an off road car (doubt the new Dakar is set-up anything like the Dakar of the 80s), and in the ever mindfulness of weight saving there's no serious skid plate.

FAL is there for the steep driveways, speed bumps etc. but the plastic fiber underneath doesn't protect from anything other than dust and pebbles. For comparison, I use my V8 Touareg for fishing, camping and tow over 7,000 pounds, etc but I got rid of the VDub cardboard so called dust protector and installed a 1/4 inch stainless steel skid plate running the length of the engine/oil and tranny pan. I don't care about mpg, I care about protection given where I drive. If it goes through that, I'll call the tow folks. Hasn't been an issue in 13 years I've owned the car driving from the arctic circle to the Canadian Yukon and BC.

Yeah that was my curiosity, could you wack something mid-speed bump or on some sort of peaked road…

Could you? Possibly. Will you? ...

You just have to use judgement and when the unexpected hole in the road, 2x4 or other is encountered...no sport's car is really intended to provide that kind of protection.

It's not just the underside, which is generally pretty well protected (plus, it's the underside so if it gets scraped no one is really the wiser except for your mechanic probably).

But aside from the front splitter there is a danger of damaging the entire front bumper if a person takes a driveway or ditch at the wrong speed and angle. Which is most definitely not a 200 DIY job.

Chances are slim, but the FAL - if used properly - will prevent that.
