I'm curious for those that have purchased their cars prior to the last two years. How was the experience back then? Was there an abundance of cars at any point where you could walk into the dealer and have choices of different 911s? or was the allocation game still afoot even before the pandemic and the recent years?

Allocations for non-GT cars were pretty easy to get pre-COVID. Most dealers had numerous 911s on the lot. Non-GT 911s were routinely discounted everywhere.
I was the first customer to take delivery of a 992 in Pennsylvania. I didn’t see one in person until I saw my own car getting PDI’d. So, in some ways, my experience was similar to current buyers who haven’t had an opportunity to see features in real life before placing their order. Heck, I hadn’t seen an Aventurine Green Porsche until I saw my own car.

Concur - you could pretty much tell a dealer you wanted a - <fill in the non-GT car blank> and have an allocation within a month or two. Name a pretty decent % discount and you were on your way to a car.
And at least there were some 911s on the floor/lot to test drive or see a few different options. For a 2019 TT I had an allocation within 30 days and a good discount. Long gone...
Depends
For those w/own taste and who get new P's every yr or so, no matter what....
Cars on lots of any mfrs have crap specs and have always been irrelevant to those w/taste, no matter discounts
Discounts on ordered P's were a few %, but fairly irrelevant to one leasing and trading in car every yr anyway
Today's trade-in values make TCO of driving a new P every yr cheapest in history, esp vs perf/safety/daily-useability of today's P's vs those of ancient era (>2y ago)
And guys who've been doing this annual game for a few yrs at a well-chosen dealer (even in major mkts) tend to get their GT3, etc etc early and at MSRP, in any environment
Funny thing about hyped stuff like GT3: know guys who can get an early GT3 from their usual dealer at MSRP, but prefer TTS as their DD/wkend car; so they just (belatedly) annually spec another TTS (and jump to front of line, even in today's world of scarce allocations)....and their dealer sells those untaken GT3 spots to some unknown bozo at whatever is mkt price these days
Shortly after the current Gen GT4 came out, I was on the local dealer’s waitlist for one. My spot came up within 4 months. The dealer had multiple Caymans and 911s to look at. Any waiting list for those cars was very short.

The best deal I ever got on a 911 was in 2009 . I read on a forum that a guy got 20 percent off MSRP on a new car . There was such an over supply of cars that dealerships didn't even want them . No one was buying cars during the financial crisis . I walked into my empty dealership and told them what I had read . I wasn't even looking for a car but I said too them if they would do it I would walk the lot, find one, and buy it on the spot . Here is a much younger yrralis1 the day it happened .https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...f-my-face.html
More recently I did get 7 percent off on a Macan in Nov. 2020 just as this shortage trickery began . That was the end if it . Now its full MSRP.
The good old Porsche discount days are gone at least for now !!
Ah yes, the good ole days... 4% off without even asking, 5% or more when asking plus extras, allocation no problem, plenty of cars on the lot!
Now full msrp or more but limited supply, kind of the best of days and the worst of days to be a car salesman!
In western PA here....I have only seen 1 992 at a dealership (not for sale, was in for service). Only have seen 3 in the wild too and I live near the city and in a nice area. Pretty rare out here, wish there were more around.
The madness didn’t really start with the Pandemic, more like this year. I got a small discount and a quick allocation in Late Jan of 21, PTS order so it took about 8 months today but the process was very smooth.

Yep, in 2009 I got 25% off a manual 997.2 C2S. It'd been sitting in the dealer showroom for 8 months, everyone wanted the PDK and they had 3 from the same delivery lot that I could choose from. I had that car for 5 years, sold it in 2014 for way less that it's worth now. Life eh, what to say.
IMO the “chip shortage” and certain governments paying people not to work began the conundrum we are in now. Now the backlog cargo ships anchored off of certain ports has effectively taken them out of service the supply logistics problem is exacerbated.

It was like this last december still, there was a plethora of cars in the showroom, and more incoming.
