Default Help with color..Black vs Black vs grey...

I am about to lock in my C2 build in and narrowed it down to Jet black metallic, Base black,,,,,and agate grey....I like the base black the best,,,but agate grey shows the curves more and gives some contrasts.

I guess my main concern is about is caring for the paint. I plan on PPF the front and havent decided on ceramic the rest. However everyone talks about how soft the base black is and prone to chipping and swirls compared to other colors. (I know they are all the same but black shows more...) But Base black I would assume would be easy to match with touchup and possibly, god forbid....a respray.

I had a Gt silver 911 a few years ago and thought it was the easiest color to take are of. But then grandma sideswiped me and the so called porsche certified idiots tried to repaint it 3 times and couldnt do it right. So i am apprehensive about metallics.

anyone have any personal stories about base black paint? The dealer had a 1 week old macan in base black next to a jet metallic macan and it was already showing swirls! ....But the jet black metallic was ok.......but just doesnt look as clean as the base black. Always appeared "dusty" to me....

thanks for your opinions!

As much as I don't like PPF, if I were getting base black, I'd PPF the entire car. I feel like you'll end up marring the unprotected areas and eventually not look consistent. It also negates any cost savings by going gloss black if you PPF. However, if you don't PPF, using touch up paint like Dr. ColorChip is guaranteed to give you nearly perfect results for chips but not scratches. Jet Black, I wouldn't PPF, just care for normally. Grey will hide the mode imperfections of the three. Grey will just lose a little luster when dirty. Chalk is another one that I am amazed with its dirt and imperfection hiding properties.

I had an agate Boxster that suffered $8k in damage to passenger door and rear quarter panel. The paint match was perfect after the repair was done. Agate definitely hides dirt and swirls better and does look great. I’m also in the PPF camp (front only).

I personally think a black 911 is a waste of opportunity to have a great color and that black 911s are the most common on the market and can hurt resale. I considered an agate 718 but ultimately bought a used midnight blue 911 and then a new gentian blue 911 so I would say of your 3 choices agate would be the pick, both for personality, showing off the beauty, and for keeping clean.

3rdpedal... i appreciate the prospective. I always thought a murdered out car looks cool. But from a distance its hard to appreciate the curves on the 911. sometimes you cant even tell if its a porsche when one flies by. lol.
I have had a Yellow 911, silver, and Carrera white in the past and all 3 colors were fantastic in terms of maintenance and damage. But I thought a darker car would be cool this time. My wife has a dark blue metallic 991 turbo so I try to stay away from the night blue..lol. so I dont have many choices that really floats my boat with the current colors. the special colors are not worth the premium extra fee to me... alot of those colors come stock with a honda or toyota and Id rather get more options for the money instead...

c1pher..you make alot of sense with base black. It would be easiest to fix with Drcolorchip or respray. trying to get chips fixed on my wifes dark blue isnt easy. basically just darkening the chips to camoflage it with the surrounding area because the metallic flakes never match up.

I originally wanted agate, but have grown to LOVE the 992 in black. I have tints / PPF / Ceramic, and it is STUNNING to look at

Base black gets my vote. I think the 992 looks fantastic in black and I always prefer a non-metallic black as sometimes the metallic flakes can make it look "dusty" and take away from the deep black shine.

The base black is awesome, but will show every teeny-tiny scratch, swirl and knick. I had the color on my 991.2 and I loved it but the imperfections drove me absolutely nuts (and I'm a pretty OCD detailer.) The Jet Black Metallic has the benefits of the metallic flakes to hide the imperfections a bit, but IMO the base black looks better.

That said, I would definitely invest in proper paint correction, ceramic and PPF right from the get go.

I understand that the basic black is easily scuffed and scratched.

regular black + PPF... by choosing regular black Porsche is subsidizing about $850 of your PPF spend... (see how I justify things?)

The world has enough black 911s. If you must go black, go with the metallic as it holds up better.
Of the three choices, I would say Agate. It's elegant and will still look clean after you drive the car for a couple of miles after a detail.

Black paint requires a big commitment that many will not make. No doubt its beautiful if you can maintain it. My wife and I did European delivery on a triple black 2000 Boxster S. The delivery technician told us "Take a close look at zis car. It vill never look zis clean again." He was right.
Metallic black is only slightly better. I have had several black Porsches for many years and never ever used even a touch free car wash. Two bucket wash with microfiber towels. (and a third bucket for wheels) with only air blowing to dry. It still picked up marks that I noticed.
So my new 992 2S MT is Agate Grey. I also got Expel ultimate PPF for front and ceramic for the entire car within a week of delivery. The shine is amazing and you can see some curves in the body that the black paint just hides. Washing is a snap, including wheels and usually takes just a water spray with a mild detergent even with heavy bugs. If you drive your car a lot and occasionally use a car wash its a no brainer unless you can live with marked paint.
