Agreed. Yes, the 992 delivers supercar performance, but it's not a supercar. It's way too practical, Porsche makes way too many of them, and the construction/materials are about as exotic as pancakes.
Below is our household definition of a "supercar". The criteria works regardless of vintage -- it ignores performance figures, horsepower, or cylinders, because those are things that constantly change with time.
A true "supercar" has to meet all four of the following criteria...
Carrera GT -- supercar
Porsche 918 -- supercar
Porsche 911 -- not a supercar, fails 1,2,3
BMW M1 -- supercar (only BMW that passes)
Corvette -- not a supercar, fails 1,2,3
Ferrari F40 -- supercar

A true "supercar" has to meet all four of the following criteria...
- Limited and/or handbuilt production
- Liberal use of exotic materials for the period of manufacturer (Carbon Fiber, Titanium, Magnesium)
- Distinct compromises in utility in the name of extreme performance
- Body and chassis are not derived from a base car that failed the above three criteria

Porsche 911 -- not a supercar, fails 1,2,3

Also, your household has a definition for supercar? There's just one person in my household that would even care to contemplate the question, and that's me.

This is well thought out, and probably right, but I kind of like @phaser's definition better. Super is in the eye of the beholder.

i'm so jealous. i tried my best to get them to care. they just don't. none of their peers do either. they appreciate my cool cars about as much as my wife does; they can tell it's cool, but know nothing about it, and don't care to.
