Don't look now, but the 2021 M3 gives you 992 S performance for half the price.

"It's a torque monster, and the automatic transmission finds the right gear and holds it correctly every time."
Manual transmission is only available on the base M3 and not the Competition. You cannot get MT on the base Carrera but can for the S. Go figure.

Tho I haven’t raced one yet, but I know it’s not faster than a 992S in a straight line. I’m coming from a F82 M4 tuned on stg1 making about 540hp and it was fast but my 992S is faster. The new M3/4 are not as fast as that (in stock form of course).
Futhermore, while these new ones are very capable, almost every legit pro reviewer says the major downfall of the car is its new auto transmission; it has no engagement or fun factor at all compared to the raw DCT in the previous gen. Feels more like a fast M440i than an actual M car. That is probably the biggest disappointment along with its front end or course.

I’ve owned M3-s and each was a very rewarding experience. I can remember loving the look of each of those cars. But the current is so ugly I can’t get past it. A sports car should offer a romantic experience, mostly about performance but if it’s ugly it can kill the romance.
Appearance is almost completely subjective but to me the current look is a deal killer.

Why would everyone question their purchase b/c someone else had good things to say about another car? I assume most people here did research and bought the 911 b/c it was the car for them. Are you that insecure that someone on an internet forum has you questioning your purchase of a 100K plus toy? Perhaps therapy is on order. Just sayin...
OP- Thanks for your comparison. I appreciate your thoughts on the two given your driving and instructing experience. The schnoz has grown on me when paired with certain colors and I think the M3 is actually one of the better looking performance sedans out there. The M4 is horrible looking IMO but the M3 looks pretty good. Reviews seem to be almost universal that it is a great overall package.

so you clicked on a thread with a title that clearly illustrated what it was about. The subject of the thread, which is consistent with the title, upset you. Now, you cry about the thread because it isn't about how great your car is? Wouldn't it be better for you to, I don't know, not click on threads that will obviously upset you? I for one think its a great break from threads from a certain poster about revving beyond rev limits, how to do the best launches, how to turn on the car, how to open a door, etc.

Suggesting that we overpayed for our car. Otherwise, I'm fine with comparison threads. But lets not kid ourselves, this slipped in a bit more "messaging" than that.

Nice! 911 driver parks even more douchey than BMW driver. That must be a first! LOL.
Seriously, though, IMO speed is no longer a huge selling factor b/c Tesla has commoditized it. When a Model 3 can run 0-60 in the 3s, there's really no point in focusing on speed as a main factor in buying a car. I currently drive a tuned F80 M3 which, I'm positive, is quicker than the G8x M3. Yet, here I am with a deposit down on a manual (i.e. slowest carrera S) 911 that will cost 2x more and very likely be no quicker than my F80.
This is not because I don't like the new M3's grill as I actually like the design and find it totally fine and I applaud BMW for taking a daring approach in their styling... but it's because I'm looking for something more engaging, lower slung, lighter, and in a tidier package than my current M3... and the G80 M3 isn't it.
I plan on keeping my F80 M3 for practicaility even after my 911 arrives... but if I decide to replace my M3 with another more roomy, practical car, the G80 M3 is definitely on the short list.
Finally, if someone really cares about cost vs. acceleration performance, they would not be shopping either the M3 or the 911 as neither are bargains for that criteria.

Both cars are bought by enthusiasts for the same reasons and many BMW owners are Pcar owners now and vice versa. I do like to see the comparisons even if I'm not interested in making a change and I applaud Dr C for serving this up especially after the Fcar Roma thread he started which is now on 8 pages filled with the same level of anxiety.
Keep them coming.

I have owned two M3s concurrently with 911s and would agree the M products are excellent value. We have kept this 440 when our Targa arrived because with the two stage M package and some conservatives mods, it is a fantastic AWD hardtop convertible that you can bring anywhere...and has room for some golf clubs. I suspect we will all be warming up to the styling trend BMW appears to be going given most manufacturer's designers are somewhat savant to how consumer tastes trend - and I guess why some of us would choose to keep our 'old' ones like this. I appreciate the insight Dr. C.

The dark blue color really suits the M3 nicely. While not a fan of the G80 looks, I dig the pics you posted.
The M3 has always been a fantastic jack of all trades car. Tons of power, roomy enough, available with MT, and handling more on par with a sports car than a typical sedan. Exterior looks aside, the current generation seems to offer a huge step up in interior quality, traction, and ride quality compared to the prior gen.

Sure! Someone bring me a C8! If i can climb across those wide door sills, I'll be more than happy to try one out.
<laughing> I am active on Ferrari Chat as well, when I got my 992S and posted how good it was in comparison to a Portofino, they were ready to hang me from the gates over there. I can see some have the same response here. Hilarious. Anyone who knows me personally is well aware I'm not afraid to stick a lance in a sacred cow, regardless of the marque. They are all hunks of metal and plastic with engines/motors. It's not a religion, it's a car.

^ Sorta my point too. But to Dr. Collie's credit, he wasn't the one critical of the responses to his trolling. It was some other people who perhaps decided that it's their job to be his 'handler'.
