It's a tire that pass passed Porsche's testing procedures for performance, noise, hydroplaning etc. It's an added cost for tire manufacturers so usually only OEM tire providers participate. Is an 'N' tire better than a 'non-N'? Probably not. It's probably the exact same tire as a 'non-N' except it has a little 'N' on the side (and costs 30% more).
This isn't entirely accurate. Nspec tires can and do often vary from non-Nspec versions of the same tire. Porsche worked with the manufacturer to tune the tire to Porsche's preference. These tires are potentially slightly physically different from non-Nspec versions.
This is true. I can’t remember what car it was, might have been an old 2012 M3 I had, but had to get a single tyre replaced on the rear (less than 1k miles on them).
Tyre place put on an N spec instead of star rated, same Michelin PS2, it looked similar but the tread blocks we’re in a slightly different pattern and it has slightly more rounded shoulders. Car crabbed slightly, wasn’t good!
It got sorted pretty quick, but does prove to me the manufacturer rating isn’t just a badge printed into the tyre wall.

This is correct. I have a tire engineer friend in the industry and indeed an "N" spec tire is finely tuned to a particular chassis with Porsche-specific parameters in that one model. Now, that's not saying you will see a major difference over the non-N spec tire. It may be slightly quieter, or stop slightly better, or stick a corner just a little more - but there is a difference however subtle.
