Right! The BMW dealership is just up the road, but my Porsche dealership is two hours away. I also have a nearby Benz dealership. If there was a good MT option at BMW or Benz, I’d give it a shot.

I was seriously considering the C8 and the Cayman GTS4.0 and GT4. The C8 has too many angles for my taste and very concerned about build quality. Also, I have had too many LS motor cars and not a fan of the pushrod anymore, even though it does have a weight advantage. Thought about waiting for the C8 Z06 with the flat plane crank V8. That will be a very nice competitor to the 911 and probably in the same price range, but resale on corvettes is always a downer. In the end, it came down to a few things.

1. I love the looks of the new 992.
2. Nothing I looked at had a weight advantage except the Cayman, over the 992, I have a 2750 lb. E30 M3 and a 4400 lb. E63S AMG so I know what weight does to a car.
3. Build quality of the 911 is far better than anything else out there.
4. Handling of the 911 is at the top of the competitive heap IMO.
5. Price is high but resale is also high, not that I ever plan to sell it.

 

Like the post above I was considering both the C8 and the Cayman GT4. I've had 2 Caymans already (including my current 718 Cayman S) so figured I didn't want to have a 3rd and would instead jump up to the 911. Regarding the C8, I'm sure it's incredibly impressive but from friends with prior Vettes I've heard too many issues around the overall cheapness of it (creaks and rattles galore throughout the cabin).

Also considered the AMG GT, BMW M5 Comp and a used Ferrari 458. Your list is pretty spot on.

 

Closest competitors to the 911 are other purpose built/bespoke GT platform cars like Mercedes AMG GT, Audi R8, BMW 8 Series, Aston Vantage, McLaren 540/570, Nissan GTR, Corvette C8, etc. I don’t consider cars born from mass production vehicles as competitors (Mustang/Shelby, Camaro/ZL1/Z28, BMW 4 series/M4, etc), even though some of them are damn fine, they’re not legitimate competitors. Performance versions of economy vehicles just don’t apply, despite being pretty amazing (Shelby GT350/GT500).

 

I'm not sure the BMW fits your qualifications. It's not a purpose built sports car.

Reminder: the BMW M8 weighs 4500lbs which is as much as Ford F150 pickup truck. It's no more a 911 "competitor" than the equally porky E63S.

 

Since I have an E63S, I can confirm that it is in no way a comparison to a 911. That is why I bought a 911.

 

I just watched a video on the new E63S facelift, and it’s incredible how much better their execution is on technology.

Porsche should consider stealing some of their German rivals.

Not that I buy a 911 for tech, but Porsche is obviously trying to keep up in this arena.

 

I think the UI in the new BMWs are the best. Fast, intuitive and customizable.

With enough hard buttons to make you forget about complaining about touchscreens. In case you're one of those people.
