Yes there are other threads on this but whatever. Regarding break-in, I’d rather be safe than sorry. First 2k miles, I keep RPMs below 5k, but mostly normal “spirited” driving, and do a break in oil change at 2k miles. Send oil out to blackstone for analysis. Then at 10k miles, do another oil change, and send oil out to blackstone again for another analysis comparison.

If you go to Porsche Track Experience or PDS, they throw those cars on the track immediately, nevermind break in. Whenever I ask my dealers about break-in, they officially tell me to keep revs below 4500 but I get the wink (you know what I mean).

Once the engine is up to temperature I drive it like normal. I’ll probably own the thing for 20k miles I’m not spending 5-10% of those miles driving it like a Camry. YMMV

I do make an effort to vary the RPMs in the initial 1k miles.

For comparison, here is the factory break-in recommendation for the C8. Sounds pretty similar to the Porsche US recommendation.

Is the oil warmed up? Congratulations, your car is broken in.

Requested to ride along for the PDI road test today…watched as the foreman took the car to redline (light/medium load, somewhat gradually). Said it was protocol. I am not happy, but what can I do at this point.

I never heard of a road test being part of PDI - and certainly not redlining a brand new car (I'm aware of the factory engine bench test protocol - this is different). I can't believe that guy had the stones to do that w/you in the car - I would have lost it.

I asked 3x whether this was protocol / acceptable for a new vehicle. He was very matter of fact and I didn’t feel much ability to question given he was the shop foreman. It was <2 miles and happened quick.

Genuine question - what makes the engine bench test protocol different?

Well for starters it's done with an engine - not yet installed in a car - on a bench and it's done by/at the factory. And they don't let an extensive heat cycle take place - something along those lines.* IOW, it's not some schmuck at a dealership abusing a new car in a way that should absolutely not be done. This will admittedly be my first new Porsche but it's hardly my first new car - I've been buying new cars for 27 years and I would absolutely speak up w/no hesitation and demand that my brand new car not be taken out for a "road test" - it's utter BS for a road test to be part of PDI. That's just prep and inspection, not road testing. The factory tests each engine and checks the car. This guy should be fired. I am sorry this happened to you.

*There's an article about the factory engine testing that I've seen before (via some link here on RL - sorry I don't rem where I saw it), plus there's an hour video about the factory that includes the engine bench test as well.

Edit - I just want to add that, in the long run, your car is most likely going to be perfectly fine - the biggest problem here is that that experience did not make you feel good, and I don't GAF what anyone else says - that matters. A lot. Yes, the car is prob fine, but what that guy did was not ok and it made for a very unpleasant experience. It was absolutely not necessary and it was def not something recommended. F that guy.
