Default 992 Targa Rattles?

I'm tempted to order the new Targa. Given that the 992 is more of a refresh of the 991, can someone answer if there are common rattle issues with the 991 Targa top?
I hate creaks and rattles in cars!

I've had my 991.2 Targa for just over two years now. The top is remarkably reliable and almost completely silent when up. I say almost because I do have an intermittent vibration sound that I've been unable to track down and of course the dealer never gets to hear it. Rather than insist the dealer find it and fix it and risk having them put some junior wrench jockey on the case, I've decided to live with it. It's non-existent with the top down and I can drown it out with the radio when the top is up.

More usefully, I can tell you that complaints about the Targa top noise and reliability are virtually non-existent on the 991 forum. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you @DaveGee !
I have minor rattles in my AMG GT C, and that's the hardtop version! (I'm hoping they will be fixed, but it's never ideal to have the dealer take panels off...).

How do you find the wind noise/buffeting at highway (~80 mph) speeds?

The lines of the Targa are just beautiful -- the full cabriolet just loses a lot of the classic 911 styling, in my opinion.

Tolerable, in my opinion. I put the top up due to the heat from the sun more so than from the wind noise/buffeting.

Agree on the Targa vs convertible styling.

the targa is noisier at highway speeds than the cabriolet. sometimes on very bad roads I'll hear a bit of creaking around the targa top, but only on very bad roads, on normal roads it's very quiet. That being said I would not get a cabriolet over the targa, it's a lot more special.

I’m considering a Targa. When you say tolerable, can you tell me a bit more? I’m fine with wind noise, which is expected. It’s the buffeting that I’m worried about - the pulsing throbbing sound in your ear (like when you have one window down on some cars/SUV). I do a lot of highway driving and wouldn’t want to always have to have the roof up if that’s happening. Thanks for any insights!

My 991.2 Targa is a DD including in the snow and it’s been noise free when the top is up for the almost 2 years of driving it. The wind “noise” with the top down is definitely not buffeting that exists when driving 911’s at speed with one window down. Like DaveGee, I put my top up when it’s ridiculously hot rather than to avoid “noise” but frankly, I rarely do long road trips in my car.

I have a 992 Targa 4S and have not noticed rattles of any kind. And as far as the "buffeting" it is an issue if you have the top down and windows up, but with windows down I don't notice any problem. Windows don't have to be down all the way to eliminate, or at least greatly reduce the buffeting. To me the buffeting is a non-issue. If I have the top down I have the windows down. If you're driving at highway speed with the top down it's going to be loud - but not from the buffeting effect. I haven't driven a 911 Cabriolet to compare, but have had C5 and C6 Corvettes in the past, and don't see much difference with the Targa with the roof down/off.

Did Porsche address the buffeting yet?

a wind screen was being developed to solve it

it will be a 'recall' of sorts (re-design)

They've added a wind deflector at the top of the windshield in the 992 that pops up when the Targa roof is opened - and you can manually push it back down if you'd prefer. It does help the buffeting you hear with the windows up but creates some wind noise above you. I don't bother with it. With the windows down (even half way) I don't notice much buffeting. See attached. Deflector is shown at about 1:20 of the video. For some reason his is not deploying automatically as it should....

My 991.2 Targa has this and “remembers” where it was left the last time the roof was opened. I find the ideal position for the deflector is up at slower speeds (up to legal highway limits) and down at speeds above that.

I've had my 992 Targa 4s since end of September. No rattles at all. Feels very solid. https://rennlist.com/forums/992/1215...ate+grey+targa

Wind buffeting: if windows are fully up at speeds between 70-90 km/h (40-55 mph) the buffeting is quite pronounced without the wind deflector. With the deflector up it's not an issue. Perhaps a little bit more wind sound, but nothing that bothers me. I drive it in sport mode so the main sound is from the sports exhaust. If one of the windows is down about 2 inches the buffeting is also gone. Then no deflector needed.

At speeds above 100-105 km/h (65 mph) it works either way, with our without the deflector. No issues with the buffeting.

I find myself driving without the wind deflector most of the time. For me, like for dgtarga, the buffeting is a non-issue.

For a longer-term view... I've owned my 2015 991.1 Targa 4S since new and have never had any Targa top rattle issues whatsoever.

No rattles. The key is to keep the seals lubed. There are threads on this. I have also had other convertibles and in comparison my 991.2 Targa GTS drives as quietly as a hardtop with the top up. There is no real buffeting....relative to other convertibles but obviously to going to be noisier since wind is blowing all around you. I can still have a convo with the wife and even take phone calls.
