2020 or 2021

Hi all. Thanks to covid I’m in a situation where the car I ordered in January is now going into the body shop at the end of the month. When speaking with my SA, he said that the car will be a 2020 model year and will be delivered in August. If I want a 2021, I’ll have to wait until Spring. My question is, will the 6-7 month wait be worth it if the plan is to sell the car in 5-6 years for a new model? How much of a difference in depreciation will there be selling a 2020 car in 2026 versus a 2021 model. Thanks!

I asked my SA that, and he said that buying a car late in production means it will be a lower mileage car for the year at trade in. If I waited, I would have more miles on an early
production model at trade in, so it offsets. I’m not sure that it makes sense, but I wanted the car sooner than later.

Do you want to be able to enjoy the car this Fall? Get a 2020.
If the alternative is taking delivery in January, the question is “Do you live in a place where you can enjoy it January?” I took January delivery of my Alfa 4C Spider during a particularly snowy year and didn’t get to actually enjoy the car until Spring — yeah, from experience, that sucks.
If the plan is to sell in 5-6 years, at that point, a one year model difference means less to the actual value of the car than other things like it being 992.1 vs a 992.2, mileage, condition, etc. Don’t sweat it.

As others said. If going from say 992.1 to a 992.2 that would be more significant. Since the 992.1 2020 and 2021 are really identical and only a few option changes from model year. Miles, options and warranty left on this cars matter more at trade in than the specific model year. If we were switching over to 992.2 that is a different story, but you have a few years before that happens. Also there has not been any larger issues or refinements between these two model years, so no need to wait IMO.

Five years down the road the price difference between a '20 and a '21 will mainly come down to condition, miles and maintenance/accident history. Cars at the extremes option-wise (stripper versus over-optioned) may get a few dollars less or more.

I kind of think you're overthinking this.
Buy. Drive.
Rinse. Repeat the Drive part.

I think the only changes for 21 that really matter if you care about them are a slightly wider offset on some wheel options (unclear how noticeable this will be visually) and if you are getting light design you get multi-colors (wahooo!). Premium package for 21 saves you a few bucks if you were ordering all those options on a 20.
... basically I wouldn't worry about it.

I was in the same boat. I had an allocation that was supposed to be built this month but it got cancelled and moved to a 21 for a Nov delivery. I called around and found an open 20 slot and took it. I'm leasing, so I don't care about the resale value down the line. Oh and I want to drive my car now dangit!

Guys help here. I “ordered” mine early Feb by putting a rather large deposit (I didn’t care and didn’t know $1-2k at some dealers is enough) and its been pushed back twice. How the hell do I know for sure I’m not being lied to about the allocation? All I get is a simple paper with the “planned” and “estimated” dates of each step from lock to delivery. I’m thinking if just calling the SA and saying x date is the final date and then I want my deposit back. What documents should I be getting?

I thought that when Germany re-opened a few weeks ago that all cars being made from that point are 2021's
i.e. that the 2020 run was finished...???
Jav- delays due to the virus? You can't give Porsche ultimatums... They sell all the cars they make...

I have a 2021 order that is a mid-July build. Some 2020 cars are still being built with August delivery dates. My guess is the change over is minimal since it is basically the same model with a few additional options. Technically, they could build both model years on the same assembly line. Only difference would be the options.

My car was built immediately after the shutdown, it’s a 2020. Which makes sense as it was locked and I assume parts all lined up before the shutdown.
