Shift Knob change on 992 - more insights?
Bingo. This is correct. It’s function is totally different vs 991 so it is different. It’s just to put into D or R and shifting is via “floppy paddles”. Having had both - 992 is a much better option vs 991.1 MF wheel w/ “buttons” for PDK - Lord that was ugly. This is quite nice and I’ll take the shaver and paddles. I’m good. Til the stick comes out anyway !
If the original #nubbin had been such a form-meets-function Tour de Force, I very much doubt Porsche would already be offering an "alternative" - for a fee, of course. The two nubbins are actually quite different in appearance even though their functionality is the same. I'm not buying the whole "we got rid of the PDK shifter because people were putting too much stress on the PDK shifter." How many PDK gear shifter failures have been reported on Rennlist? I think the "*****" shifter is awesome. So easy to switch into manual mode and to have the option of "shifting" with the PDK gear shifter is a nice bonus. In essence, with the #nubbin, Porsche took away an option. Namely, the option of shifting with the "dlido" (as detractors enjoy calling it). I have found that in life, it is always better to have more options than less. But that is just me.
It's not even remotely a big deal. Rennlisters love to complain about new things on the 911. What else is new. Personally, the old PDK looked like an old fashioned Automatic lever and I hated that. I associate those levers with automatic slush boxes and never thought the look fit a proper sports car. In my opinion, the smaller the better. No way Porsche would go back to that big old fashioned vestigial contraption.
Nothing new. Porsche offered an up-charged alternative ***** on the 991 PDK shifter, too. Porsche loves their options, don't you know.

rk-d - The above may not be true. The 992 GT3 PDK mule spy shots have shown the car has a "*****-style" PDK gear shifter. If the GT3 is outfitted with the "old-school" 991 shifter, that speaks volumes about what AP and the GT division think about the nubbin and about which option provides a more sporty driving experience.

If the PDK ***** was so vital to the experience why would they not put it in the 918, particularly the Weissach package? Why don’t any Ferraris have this for instance? In fact, I’d even get rid of the little nubbin and just use buttons. Clean it up completely.

Seems to me that the nubbin was designed to go on the dash, not the console, a'la Taycan, and the only reason it's on the console in the 992 is because of a need to accommodate manuals as well.
Yeah the original nubbin on the 918 was on the dash by the steering wheel. That's why it wasn't as big of a deal there. In the 992 is just in the middle of the open for everyone to see.
Will be getting a solid gold rolex courtesy of the Porsche treasury department upon retirement.
My wife, when she saw it and heard me complaining about it, said "Well maybe Porsche did it so you had easier access to the control buttons BEHIND it". That is the best answer I've heard or seen so far. ;-)
