992 LCD dash visibility issue - possible solution?
Hi fellas, I'm fairly sure someone must have suggested this by now but since I haven't seen it yet I'm just putting this out here. General concensus is that the outer two dials on the instrument cluster have limited visibility due to them being too far out, and the steering wheel blocks the view which is dividing potential customers and reviewers. The reason for that clearly is that each dial is individual and displayed as a whole circle so it takes up more screen "real estate", as opposed to staggered display like on the 991 which takes up less space end to end and therefore fits into the steering wheel cutout.
Since the 4 outer dials are digital and only the center one is physical/analogue, all Porsche has to do is (a) adjust the display through software update so the digital dials are displayed staggered like the 991, or (b) offer drivers a switchable choice between modern display (spread out) and legacy display (staggered) in PCM so they can choose one to their preference, like the image below. Shouldnt be hard to do, its just software right? I am guessing no one complained about visibility in the earlier models? What are chances Porsche will listen to feedback and implement something like this?
After more than a thousand miles of driving my 992, this is a huge non-issue.
With Sports Chrono, there are three clocks in my car. Does it matter if one is obscured?
When the right hand display is set to multi-function, it includes the fuel level/range along with oil temp, oil pressure, etc.
There’s a lot of redundancy with this car — with the speed on the tachometer, I am not even sure why I have a speedometer.
Water temperature is the only thing that is only available on that right most gauge and it’s hardly a critical datapoint that needs to be handy at every moment that you’re driving.
The dash display is beautiful. I love how the left and right edges emerge from the dash itself. No change is necessary here.
OR....... What would be even cooler, there's a customizable button on the steering wheel that you press and the instrument cluster just bunches together into the staggered display a la 991 and when you release the button, the dials go back to the spread out formation.
Agree. It's a clever solution, but short of a recall, I can't see a major car company making a significant change to the cluster like this - one that would have otherwise resulted in a physically smaller display. It doesn't seem very German to do an ad-hoc running change in the UI. The separated gauges also look better.
I love my 997 and have considered a 992 .
This issue alone ( dashboard view obscured by the steering wheel ) is important enough for me to never consider a 992- unless the problem is fixed by Porsche. It is incomprehensible to me that Porsche a company world renowned for its engineering would design a sports car steering wheel that obscures a drivers view of important vehicle information . Every time I would look at the instrument cluster it would make me think - WHAT were they thinking !!
I know the 992 is a wonderful car and I expect to get flak for my post so be it .I only posted this because I know Porsche monitors Rennlist and I hope that someone there fixes such a ridiculous design flaw in their HALO sports car.

I love my 997 and have considered a 992 .

Honestly, it's really not that big a deal. More of a minor annoyance.
All four Porsches (three 911s, one Cayman) I've owned obscured not just the outer gauges but the top of the tach as well when I adjust my seat and steering wheel to my preferred settings. This is less than a non-issue: it's reviewers seeking minutiae to comment on when they have nothing of value to say. Any reviewer that jumped on the "obscured gauges" bandwagon loses a significant measure of credibility in my eyes.
