That is the assumption I have been operating on as well and I'm experimenting with it as we speak. I remembered how the old keys would go inactive after 5 days so then I realized I hadn't driven my car in 2 days when the CA became much more finicky. I haven't figured out exactly how long it takes to "act up" but I'll let you know what I find out after this weekend.
I thought I read a post here somewhere that if you don't use CA for 72 hours, you have to use the fob and then it resets.
I tend to wipe down my car after a days drive,,,, damp micro fiber, etc.. I SWEAR, every time I wipe near the Porsche emblem, closer to the bumper, not up on the hood itself.. it opens. It actually opens more often than I want it to as a result... I find you need to be in contact with the surface (not hover over it) and wipe near the bumper side of the hood seemline vs on the emblem itself.
even if the key is away from the car? I ask because all our cars will constantly lock/unlock if youre washing them and the key is close to the car.

I think thats how its supposed to work. Or its the way it always has worked. You lay your hand between the badge and the lower lip of the hood. It then unlocks. Does the manual state that waving a hand over it will open it ?
Regarding the key or car going into a sleep mode - the light on the previous gen keys will illuminate randomly when theyre away from the car. Its a handshake (or attempt) with the car. I wonder if they hampered this in the name of security and its impacting behavior ?
Prior to the 992, the key would unlock the car if you held a bag containing the key and then touched the door handle. Its frustrating that a system that was so reliable has become an annoyance. Perhaps in an attempt to better secure the vehicle ?

The manual is pretty vague.
But yes, it's a touch not a wave. I'm not sure where the wave idea originated. I see people on this forum always talk about the wave and how it doesn't work.
I agree with 992Sam. When wiping my car down, as soon as I wiped the crest the hood would pop open. It scared me at first but then I thanked it for working each time afterward. Now I leave the keys on the bench. My door handles pop out when I touch the underside handles.
Quick learning's so far: It worked fine after an hour as I would hope it would. I then tried it about 11 hours later and I had to place my hand under the handle twice before it auto extended so there is probably some sort of timer but I'm not sure exactly what it is set to. I know after a couple of days I had to reach under the handle and pull it a couple of times before it would auto unlock. This software currently resides, not in the vaults of Porsche, but in the Twilight Zone!

As mentioned by the other respondent, the manual is vague, but the sales rep told me "waive your hand close to the crest"... It definitely is a rub which I am not a fan of doing with my bare hands if the car is dusty (which it rarely is 😂

Logically there has to be a sleep mode, or the battery would rapidly drain down over a week or so of siting... I assume this isn't a problem unique to Porsche or the 992.. maybe with the exception of a Tesla which theoretically has a battery that could sit for years idle!

I have experienced this problem when making short stop like at gas station. I have also let the car set in garage for a few days and had the handle pop out with touch. Sometimes it will work every time for several days then suddenly it won't. Even if I take key out of pocket and hold near door lock. I would say my experience is that it works about 60% of time. Seems to have mind of its own. The touch lock works 100%.
Here is the page from the quick start guide regarding CA going to "sleep" after 96 hours. That said, I hadn't driven my car for a week over the weekend and unlocking using CA worked just fine.
The frunk rarely opens for me without clicking the button, but perhaps I've been "waving" too high and need to try closer to the bumper?

I start with my hand below the edge of the frunk lid, then swipe up to the crest. I keep my hand as close to/or touching the body as possible, and try to get the key close too (which is natural anyways, because the key is in my left pocket and I have to lean down a little).

RTFM! Thanks for forcing me to read the instructions. I too have been waving my hand near the crest whereas the manual page says to start over the front bumper below the crest. Sure enough, I practiced tonight and opened the frunk about 10 times in a row. At first I thought the sweet spot was only on the bumper, i.e., not the frunk lid, but then settled on sweeping once from the edge of the bumper to the crest and that works pretty reliably (for me).
