992 Targa
I really love the Targas, but can't get over the complicated machinery and extra weight imposed by the current implementation (991).
I'd really love if they brought back a manual targa option, where you just stow the top in the frunk.
Thoughts?

Would be cool.
Not gonna happen in a million years.

Targa top weight is about 200lbs and the AWD is the other 100lbs. Even with the weight on a 991.2 Targa GTS, it handles very well, tracks well, and accelerates well. I like the automatic top. Much better than taking up storage space with removable hard top, safer and better than a roll up type top. Now if they wanted to offer the Targa in 2wd, that would be cool and drop a third of the weight gain. Also offering SPASM would be nice too.

I'm with you, and also have a plexiglass option.

My first 911 was a 1987 Targa. While I loved that car, I would never go back to a manual Targa roof. Get in the car, pull the frunk release and unlatch the top. Get out of the car, open the frunk, lift the top off, fold it, and put it in the frunk. Close the frunk and get back in the car. Parking somewhere? Time to reverse the process. Targas are not for those who want a simpler, lighter weight car. That's what 911Ts are for.

That's my point. If lighter weight is your desire, buy a T and forgo open air motoring. If you want top down or semi top down driving, buy a cab or a Targa. Why on earth would you buy a Targa and not take the top off every chance you get? As a cab owner, weight and simplicity were not a consideration when I bought my car. I was just pointing out that living with an old manual top Targa was a major hassle. I actually swapped my '87 Targa for an '86 cab because putting the roof down in the cab was a much easier operation.

I feel like if you order a Targa or Vert you are aware that you are compromising top level performance for some additional "fun factor"... completely worthwhile trade-off in my view. Bring on the new Targa!

Totally agree...not like we're expecting a GT3 experience, we who buy them are just darting around on public roads.
On the other hand, if they made a GT3 Targa; I would very happily pay the premium, even if it cost me a second on track day and had a bit of flex. Anyone at Porsche listening? Take my money please!

I track my 991.2 Targa GTS. I also purchased it fully aware I was adding some weight and losing a little track performance at its highest end. I do just fine keeping up on track with GT3s and GT4s in my run groups. I am positive someone with more experience in a higher run group would get a quicker time out of a GT3 than a Targa GTS, but thats ok. I have 2 seats for my young kids and can put the top down for a partial open top experience.
That being said, if a Targa could be optioned with a 4.0 NA, 4 seats, and GT3 suspension parts I would be in. Seeing as thats not likely to happen, I will be holding onto my .2 Targa GTS for a good amount of time if I can.
911 Targa GT3 Touring would be a good name for it.

Still lust over this, which mods apply to the .2.

Any experience in a .1 Targa?

^We would have to arm wrestle to see who gets to be on that list first. There was a .1 Targa at my last HPDE and he did just fine out there.

I know it they had the right idea with that build for sure! I think a lot of the appeal to me is the sound and power the GT3 makes at high rpm. I test drove a .1 Targa GTS. It was amazing car and I fell in love with it just wanted a little more torque. Dont get me wrong, it has enough, I was just coming from a lot higher torque car so I couldnt bring myself to do it. The .2 fixed that for me but takes some of the sound away. I could have been happy with the .1 but happier with the .2! Put the same engine as GT3 in it and make it look like this build though and I would quickly change my mind. Maybe 1 day Porsche will do something like this. They used to have Turbo Targas so I guess its not completely out of the question. Its just not probable. Would probably be a limited run with $100,000 ADMs and people who never wanted a Targa would be lined up to buy them and sell them in 6 months.

In another more realistic note, I would like to see the 992.2 hybrid with electric to front wheels and combustion engine to rears. More of an add electric for more power and not for fuel economy. I think that will be interesting to see how they use electric in 911s.
