Default CA license plates delayed

I have been waiting for weeks now to receive my new license plates. Std plates, not specialty plates. I know at one time, cons were making the plates. Not sure if that work actually takes place in the prisons. Could be that covid has delayed the manufacturing.

Received my registration paperwork quite quickly.

Anyone else experiencing the same?

No. Just got a new car and my new plates arrived in about 3 weeks after purchase. I bought the car just around New Year.

I’m sure it’s COVID related. I would get letters from a few of my friends that I put in NY prisons talking about how hard they work helping us out and how little they made doing it lol. The good old days.

Thankfully I’m just transferring my plate.

Took a while for me this winter too. And then they sent them to the dealer instead of me so the dealer had to mail them back to me.

I got mine in about 3 weeks. However, if you order specialty plates (which I did after I got the original plates) I was told by AAA that the current wait can be 6 to 8 months.

I’ve purchased 3 cars in California since the start of the pandemic. For every single car it took a minimum of two months to receive the plates, and in one case took nearly 3 months. There’s absolutely a massive delay right now, not sure what the cause is (could be COVID and the prisons as you mentioned).

depends on each dealership .. some process each sale immediately , others batch sales and submit to DMV every week or two or three ...

my CA delivery was mid January and I had my standard plates inside of 10 days. Took them to DMV and did transfer to personalized plates on the spot. Less than 3 weeks for entire process. Highly unusual even without the pandemic. But I hear delivery times are all over the map. Have one friend who had his paper plates expire before his real plates showed up.

This was just posted. CA DMV is in a bad way. Covid only showed us how their management is very poor. They suspended issuing Real IDs, they no longer offer appointments & now the cessation of personalized plates.

I bought my car in July. Standard plates came in three weeks. Ordered special personalized plates in August. Just got them today.

My check & order from was returned from CA DMV. They said they are not making personalized plates at this time.
