Best Fuel for GT Motor?
Slow day at work so I’ve been researching fuel for the 992 GT3/RS, and thought I’d make a thread because there are a lot of highly knowledgeable people here regarding motors and engineering who can hopefully shed some light on my current dilemma.
Is it better for the motor’s longevity, durability, and preventing it from going “boom” during a HPDE or spirited mountain drive by using ethanol free gasoline, or fuel with ethanol that performs better?
Here’s a recent video testing the new 2022 Shell V-Power 91 & 93 formulations (which now contain 5% & 7.5% ethanol respectively) vs. the previous top performing fuel Chevron 94 ethanol free. All fuels from BC, Canada and it’s very sad to see the Shell V-Power is no longer ethanol free which was always my go to fuel. Also shocking the top fuel adds 30hp & 19lbft of torque more than the lowest. I never thought such similar gasolines would have this large of a delta.
Edit: Link didn’t work, see below comment for working link.
Additionally, here’s a picture of the 992 GT3 owners manual which states the motor can tolerate up to 15% ethanol.
So which fuel should we use? Listed Best to Worst from the YouTube test:
1: Chevron 94 + 10% Ethanol Manual Mix
2: Shell 93 (7.5% Ethanol)
3: Shell 91 (5% Ethanol)
4: Chevron 94 (Ethanol Free)
Appreciate any input, thanks.

I go out of my way to avoid Ethanol in my GT3 (but we have nothing more than 91 octane in Colorado, without resorting to 100 octane race fuel that does include Ethanol).
If you can still get 94 Ethanol free, I'd use that in a heartbeat. Unless your car has an aftermarket tune, it will run best with 93 Octane Ethanol-free or slightly higher. Lower octane and any ethanol content will theoretically cause a bit of power loss.
Ethanol yields less energy than gasoline per gallon and can harm some parts in the fuel system and attract water (but nothing to get too alarmed about under E15).
If you had a specific tune for it, you could probably make more power with 100 octane race fuel with ethanol (Sunoco has around 10%, AFAIK).

I am fortunate enough to a 98 octane ethanol free pump near me. I fill up with that.

Interesting thread. I was wondering the same. I’ve found Sunoco Ultra to be the best, with Shell 93 V-Power with “ Nitro” a close second…

That website is great, but sometimes the fuels listed are not available at their pumps (only if you buy a 55 gallon drum or some other quantity), like Hill Petroleum in Arvada, CO (the Denver area).
