Center Cap Remoal

Center Cap Remoal
What's the trick here? Had a nail in tyre and had to take it to a local place. I tried first, then they tried to get the cap off with the tool. It was near impossible and ended up scratching the centre lock, bending the cap and breaking the tool. Is there some trick to this? Thanks

Gently wiggle the little cap removal tool in so the silver tip goes completely behind the cap, then slowly lever the cap out. If you don’t do that it will slip and scratch.

Drill a1/8 hole in the center of each cap do you wont see it.
If your concerned about moisture getting in just put a piece of clear tape over the hole to maintain the seal.
Then you can just use a hook stick it in the center and pull the cap straight off also put a little silicone grease on the O-ring.
Porsche used to have holes in all of the center caps use a hook to take them off.
The little tool they give you is a joke all it does is screw up the cap.
Also take a sharpie and put a mark on where the cap sits on the hub because there’s a little indentation to position it.

Thanks Carl, yeah good idea. Prying or levering the cap off with the Porsche tool it seem inevitable you end up scratching the center lock and bending the cap. Thanks you everyone else also, especially for the photo at least I can see how it should work in theory!

Drilling a hole will allow moisture/water and dust to enter the locking mechanism and hub. Causing correction. If you look at the cap there is a rubber o-ring that tightly seal the cap to the nut to prevent just that.

If your really concerned about water getting in just put a little piece of tape over the hole, problem solved!
You would have to get a lot of water in it to even reach the center lock.
I pressure wash the wheels and checked for water when i first did it and nothing.
You would need to inject water directly into the hole to get any significant amount in the hub plus centrifugal force would push the water to the OD of the hub.
If you look at the inside of the cap in the picture and you can see theres no moisture stains and i just washed the car yesterday..

yes just pull it straight out and then put some silicone grease on the O-ring which will make it easier next time. I posted the picture up above Make sure the pic has a long enough flat area to support the cap when you’re pulling it off.
