Any fees during the application process?

Penfed rates are higher as of may 2022. Yikes!!
You have to be a resident in Howard County in Maryland in order to become an APL member before you can apply for car loan.

Are there rates more competitive when you actually apply? Or is Chase just not so competitive?

This is for a used loan. New rates are slightly better.
The online tool has much higher rate than at the Chase branch or the Finance dept at dealerships. I got an “used” car loan from Chase about 10 months ago and it’s 2.14% for 72 months.

Got it. I would rather be in control vs dealership. I guess I’ll stop into a branch.

Agreed...and I've used them both many times. (DCU is awesome.)

XCEL FCU, which advertises in Porsche's Panamera magazine, is also good.

Lastly, Lightstream is often a good option.

The thing is most are limited to 100k and for ones that do 300k+, rates are ridiculous.

Do you guys think its best to do SBL?

Did you look at your local credit union?

I was going to borrow 150 from my credit union (their max) but there were some hoops to a loan that big. They wanted proof of payment funds from my part, signed paperwork, bring them that then they give you the check, go back to the dealer etc. So for convenience I got PCA numbers 5.5% from dealership. I ended up just wiring the whole amount. Saved me time.

I did... but they said theyve done 500k for a boat lol. I donno. My clients work at the CU so I dont want to give them a wrong impression that I am making good money. (Which I am not but just stretching my finance for a dream car)

Cue preachy voice… don’t stretch for a car. It’ll own you rather than you owning it.

Unhappy Jun 2022 rates

I have a top-tier credit score. For the loan amount of $90,000, I have pre-approval with the following rates online:
- BoA: 3.54% (60)
- DCU: 3.24% (65)
- PenFed: 3.79% (60)

Interest rates spiked these days!

I have used PenFed many times over the years but the last few went to DCU for reasons self evident above and they've been excellent.

most places can do $150k with dispensations. With a long business relationship and excellent credit, you can get $200k from a regular auto loan at a credit union or major bank. That does take some extra approvals.

Generally the over $200k loans are specialty places like Woodside that charge a lot extra. Portfolio loans are infinitely better in that bracket. All the major brokerages and many of the minor ones are extremely happy to help folks spend their pre-tax investment profits.

One more pre-approval from my local credit union (California):
- 2.74% (60 months)
