Default Brand new 911 s gen 2 with 4000 miles got a nail in back left tire.....

2017 911 s gen 2 with 4000 miles gets a nail in the tire on back left side.....
Do I replace one tire ( I have insurance)?
Do I put in a mushroom patch?
Do I shave the one new tire?
Do I replace two back and bite bullet on second tire cost?
And keep the one used tire as spare....

I'm concerned with rocking the boat as the car handles and steers and tracks so well now.....

Well, 4K miles on a summer tire can have significant wear, since they typically don't last more than 15K miles... if you drive your car the way it was meant to be. Many times even less. I'd replace both, but if you don't drive hard (no significant heat-cycling), then you should be okay. Hate when that happens. I got a puncture once with only 20 miles on the clock. Talk about bad luck.

Was nail in the left rear tire? If so, where on that tire was it inserted? This impacts the factual answers you should receive. I have had 4 nails in two 991s with <4000 miles on the tires. All four were left rears. Based on the placement of the nails, each had a different fate. The first caveat is to NEVER track a repaired tire regardless of the position of the nail. The others can be dealt with given some consideration of the tasks imposed upon them.

Why is it always the left rear???

My first nail in tire recently occurred on my brand new Macan GTS.
Rear left tire! What's w/ that!

Depends on where the object entered the tire. If its close to the shoulder or face the tire wall then the tires garbage.
Porsche will not do repairs to tires but a good Indy will. And a good indy will only repair the tire if the object that entered is far enough from the edge of the tire. I drive with a puncture repair to my rear tire as they were able to plug and patch.

But if I was a track enthusiast then I would replace the tire no questions.

Drove for ~7 months with a patch in... wait for it... left rear tire. In mid-winter (Dallas, so not all that cold), the patch appeared to be slowly leaking -- less than a PSI a day, but still irritating. No other ill effects.

4,000 miles is nothing. Replace the one tire. Plug and patch the damaged tire, and properly store as a replacement emergency spare.

Wow almost same thing happened to me. At 4k miles my right rear tire hit a nail. I just replaced the one tire and it was fine. I just replaced all 4 tires now that the car has 16k miles.

I have 19,000 miles on my rear tires and they still have enough tread for a few thousand miles. And I "drive" my car (just not recklessly on a street; I keep the high speed driving to the track).

Just plug/patch and drive it. Unless you're tracking you'll be fine.

funny enough i just had the exact the same thing happen to me over the weekend, i found it saturday morning, left rear, drove it to my dealer and they put a new tire on. I have 5K miles and didn't worry about it, I don't think you will notice the difference.

If nail is not by the sidewall, patch it and don't give it a second thought.

1.) Patch if you can. You'll be fine on the street.
2.) If it is on the side wall, replace both rear tires. I understand frugality but you just bought a $100K+ car. Two rear tires isn't that much money.
3.) If you track, you already know the answer. If your're tracking right, you're buying new tires every year so this whole thread is futile. If you want to start doing DE, don't patch.

This was my gift after 1000 miles on new tires......... I just changed one.

Do a tread depth check and then make your decision.

If you change both ..... keep the good one as a spare or place it in the classifieds for someone else that has had bad luck.

If it's a 305 sometimes those become scarce during the year.
