I have been driving 170 miles a day, 95% highway for the past 10 years. I've gone through a few BMW M3's, X5's, a 550i, and most recently a well crafted but slow 6 speed Cayenne. I owned an 89 911 along the way. I am looking for a car I look forward to spending 3.5 hrs a day in everyday, but it must be a comfortable road car. If a Porsche I would choose a manual for the fun factor, even though the PDK is superior to the BMW DCT. If a BMW an M6 GC or M5 for the comfort factor. What 911 could/should I consider targeting to fulfill the comfort and enjoyment factor. Thanks for your advice/support.

I've owned a 2014 BMW 650i Gran Coupe and now a 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. While the GC is a fantastic car (and superior if you truly need the backseat... albeit still very tight), the ride quality of the 911 is not really much worse.
I've not been in an M6, but my wife has an X6M and the suspension is a bit tighter than my 650i GC was. Given this, I would expect the M6 to ride very much like a 911 with respect to bumps.
I have 21" HRE's and GMG springs (~1/2" lower) on my 911, so a "stock" 911 would likely ride even smoother than my experiences.
With the ride quality being similar, seats might be the bigger factor for you. I've been very pleased with both the BMW seats as well as the 911. I have the 18 way adjustable, which I highly recommend after seeing an online review comparing this with the 14 way. Surprisingly, the 14 way appeared to very hard comparatively, which I would not have fathomed.
Great problems to have, lots of great cars out there!
Best bet is to take both for a spin so you can gauge it yourself. I can assure you that you will look much more forward to your drive in a 911 than an "M", it's just that much more special!

spent 4 or 5 hours driving one from Jacksonville to Boca Raton. Didn't think so at all. Felt more comfortable than my 991 actually. Maybe it's just the better roads down south.

But honestly, I wouldnt get a 911 for that much seat time. Get a Panamera. I have a 911 and a Cayenne and the Cayenne is an amazing place to while away the miles, but lacks the sportiness being and SUV (still sporty for what it is).
The last gen Panamera was an amazing handling car when properly equipped. I remember the first time I drove a Panny Turbo. I was blown away. I suspect that a new gen 4S with air suspension would be an absolutely amazing daily driver.

If a 911, then consider the 991.2 Targa 4. (If you don't have to have a MT, then a 991 TT/TTS.)
If a non-911, a McLaren 570GT or an R8 V10 (a non-plus version)

Constant stop-go traffic? In which case I wouldn't take a 911....seems little point. Or an M anything etc.
My 3 hours a day in NJ/NY traffic is a 428 xDrive. Nothing special, nice and safe (a lot of crazies in my commute), creature comforts, lots of miles on the clock. Anything else, for me, would be a waste.

I LOVE driving. I drive about 50,000 miles/year. 35-40k in my DD SUV, and another 10-15k in the Porsche for fun. No way in hell would I want to drive 170 miles/day like the OP, let alone in a 911. Good luck in your search.
