I chose to drive mine from Salt Lake City to Austin TX when I bought it. I went the "long" way to hit the best roads I could along the way and it was a blast! I only spent about 40-50 miles on the Interstate.
I learned a lot about the capabilities of the car and had no comfort problems. I was lucky in a way since my route allowed me to go through windy roads in the Utah and Colorado mountains and wide-open back roads in eastern New Mexico and northwest Texas. It was the best 1400+ miles I've ever driven. I took two and half days to do it.
My wife didn't want to do the drive with me since she knew I was going to want to push it hard through the mountains and hates really long drives, but she provided wonderful remote support. We played the details of my route and stop points each day by ear. She would look online while I was driving to identify good towns and places to stop and eat and/or spend the night (very helpful since I was in the back-country a lot). Then she'd call and book the hotel so I knew I had a place to stay. It worked out nicely.
i drove my boxter s from atlanta to pittsburgh around 700 miles and it was a great trip
precaution: if the car has no clear bra , stay far away from trucks to avoid rock chips
Drove my 2013 Carrera 1200 miles home and just finished a 3300 mile road tour in it. We also did a 3000+ mile tour of the Rocky Mountain National Park last summer in it. If you don't mind the miles drive it...one more story to tell.
I'd drive it, no doubt about it. When I bought my previous pcar, I decided to drive it from Miami, FL to NC only to break down in South Carolina due to water pump. Had it towed to Raleigh and it sucked looking at the car on the flat bed instead of driving. Even with that experience, I'd do it all over again. If I did, I'd make sure to have a plan in case of emergency. Is it CPO? My C2 was local so no road trip.
I had the same predicament and I decided to ship it.
On another purchase I drove cross country with a different car and sustained a windshield rock chip 900 miles into the drive; it was a costly chip although most insurances cover it.
Also mileage and time were a concern for me so it just made sense to have it shipped.
If it had ultra low mileage, which you would have paid extra for, I would probably transport it. In your case with medium miles, I would definitely drive it.
Whoever told you it was uncomfortable to drive a long distance in I would disagree with. My 2014 911S cabriolet's noise levels and ride are not quite to a sport sedans level of quiet or smooth but still very acceptable.
Mine is daily driver and I don't believe in garage queens but keep in mind that you will expose her to lots of debris on a trip like that. If you don't have a clear bra that could be very costly. Punctured tires, cracked windshield also come to mind. You could tape the nose up. I say transport and drive the hell of her when you get her. Also if transport screws up they will pay. If you screw up it is on you.
Drive it, it will be a trip you'll never forget.
Three years ago I bought my '12 C2S in St Louis and drove it home to Utah. Great 2 1/2 day trip. Three years before that I found my '89 Carrera in New York. My oldest son and I made it a 4 1/2 day drive home. Epic cross-country drive in an air-cooled 911.
I am about to purchase a 2013 Carrera. It is 1800 miles from my residence. One friend says ship it home because the road noise will make you deaf and the ride will make you stiff. Another says drive it home, the car is very comfortable. This is a 911 C2 with sport exhaust and PASM and 18 way
seats. Input??
It's very comfortable. I'd pick my Carrera for a road trip every single time. And I think my drive home was about 1,800 (SLC to Minneapolis). I got like 34mpg too.
