My 2017 Targa 4S has a 7 speed manual and a clutch pedal. Not sure where you got your misinformation from....
As for the OP's question I love my Targa. Best of both worlds IMHO. Feels and sounds a coupe with the top closed but has the open air perks of a cab without the horrible blind spots when the top is up and less wind when the top is down (but the cabs are great too don't get me wrong). I also like the extra stiffness and safety provided by the Targa bar esp for my 6 year old who sits in the back.
I just noticed you have a 997 Turbo Cab I had an '08 with a 6 speed manual and as stiff as it was I could feel the chassis flex and it felt heavy and slower even though it weighs the same and made more power (it was tuned to 500hp @ the wheels)
My only gripe on the Targa top would be that I can't put the top up or down in motion like a cab but I understand both the safety issue with the decklid covering the brake lights and the rear glass window acting like a parachute and being stressed @ speed. I only drive it on nice days so I have yet to find myself in a situation where I would need to pull over to put the top up.
Stock PSE exhaust was too quiet for me. Fabspeed headers, sport cats and carbon fiber tips fixed that. I am in love with the exhaust now and have received so many compliments on the sound.
Would be nice if I could have it in RWD but the AWD system from the Turbo is very efficient and VERY heavily RWD biased. I can spin the rears for a second or two before power is transferred to the front when the rear tires are cold. I've owned many AWD cars, 10+ Audis (including an RS4 and S4 with sport differential), a few Subarus and BMWs, a GT-R, 997 Turbo and 993 Turbo. Of them all the 991.2 AWD is the most transparent.
I drove a PDK 991.2 Targa 4S @ PEC Atlanta in anger and it is every bit as capable as a coupe. Only thing holding it back is the driver. I was able to pass every other car/driver on the PEC track with ease, including Turbos and GT3s. It was also a blast doing a full revolution of the wet friction circle sideways looking out the drivers side window instead of the front windshield.
If you have any specific questions about the 992.1 Targa 4S I'm happy to help...post here or PM me.

You know why....right? Most people going to PEC are right off the street looking for a joy ride or cashing in their birthday present from a spouse. They don't know how to really push a Porsche. I was lapping GT3s at PEC-Atlanta in a 981 for the first 8 or 9 laps.....until the driver got comfortable and obviously received some coaching.
Sorry OP. That was OT.

Of course I know why. I have years of track experience and run in the black group with PCA. The PEC instructor in the GT3 asked my instructor over the radio who was in the car with him because they weren't use to seeing that kind of speed from a guest. He thought he had another instructor out with him
Anyhow go back re-read what I wrote in the line before you bolded:
"Only thing holding it back is the driver."
In other words the Targa is not slow around a track. If it is, the driver is to blame. We are saying the same thing.
Many on these forums mistakenly think or assume the Targa is "soft" or "lesser" than the coupe and it's not. I have no illusions that a GT3 or Turbo is much faster with the right driver behind the wheel.
