Well, after 3 pages of comments, and great arguments on both sides, have you decided? Any 991 911 is a great car. It really is a personal decision. Get the one you feel most happy with. Drive them both for sure, then find the one you want. And then drive it every chance you get and enjoy it.

I bought a 2013 S hardtop with manual transmission and SPASM.

I will be keeping mine, but, if I decide to sell, it will be more in demand.

I drove a 350Z Roadster with the top down in the summers (most of the time actually). Now as I am getting older I regret being in the sun so much.

Convertibles are great, the beach is great, the sun is not so great for me anymore.

all 991s are hardtops. 997 was the last 911 soft top.

Keeping a hat in the car does wonders and a little sunscreen. I wish I was more worried about this too when I was younger.

I live in the Detroit suburbs and my 911 Cab typically hibernates during the winter. However in February we had some 68 degree days and that baby came out top down. This is my fourth Porsche Cab and 2 Corvette convertibles previous to the Porsche's. I am a full fledged Top Down kind of guy, and need that ragtop. For me, there is no substitute.

In the end, it boils down to one thing, get what you like/want,,,, or in the long run you most likely won't be happy ,,,,,,, for me wind, noise, bugs in my teeth, a hat and sunscreen as i get older,,,,, Yahoooooooeeeeee

Who are we kidding. It's not an 'either-or' question.
What each of us really needs is:

- a C4S Coupe for daily driving plus ski trips.
- a C2S Cab for when it's nice out (but not too hot and not too sunny.
- a GT3 RS for track/AX.
- an air-cooled 911 (gen to taste) for nostalgia.

This is a bare minimum, I think. Wife disagrees.

If you want a true 911 experience, then get the coupe. I currently have a GT3 and a 991 GTS 4 cab and I have had the cab on track at Spa alongside the GT3 where it still holds its head high...ish.

However, in comparison to most cars, it is incredibly good, but it is is softer than the coupe for sure. Depending on how good a driver you are, and if you don't track, you may never notice. IMHO, there is no better cab on the market than a 911. Toss a coin!

I live in Toronto and drive my Targa all year round. I always wondered about storing the car for winter, it seems like your paying for it to sit in your garage, whether through monthly payments or depreciation. In Europe most everyone I know who owns a Porsche drives them all year round, they are well engineered for harsh climates.

OP: the best way to figure it out is to rent a convertible. Mustangs are easy to find. Rent it for a week at least (anything less will not give you a sense of reality). That's what I did and here is what I learned: it's awesome on the first day or two. Then, in the everyday hustle and bustle, the raw exposure was very tiring. All the noise, heat, and the burning sun was giving me headaches. YMMV.

I actually can't be out in the sun for skin reasons and I still will always have one. Night time driving with the top down is the best. Nothing beats it. And for all the "if you want a 911 feel you want a coupe" talk I've have coupes and the convertible doesn't diminish the experience one bit.

I find the Cab perfect if you live near the beach (i do) or live in the mountains (I do also). Something about looking at the mountains through the windshield and above it.

The OP mentioned that he has kids. The back seat room is much smaller in a cab than in a coupe and the seat back is nearly vertical which leaves no room for child seats or boosters. Not a problem in a coupe.
