Default Auspuff

I just got back from a trip to Germany (Munich), and on the ride to the airport via the autobahn, the driver and I were talking (in communal pigeon-English/German) about cars and bikes. Enthusiasm is a good common language.

At one point, an M5 came torching past us with its exhaust howling. We were moseying along in a 5-series wagon.

I asked the driver, "Was ist das wort fur exhaust? Auf deutsch?

He didn't quite get me. I made a brapping sound and pointed after the M5, and pigeoned, "like, der pipe?"

"Ahh..." he said. "Der Auspuff."

"Auspuff? Like 'out poof?'"

"Ja ja...der Auspuff."

Then I pigeoned again, wondering what they called the Sport Exhaust option on a Carrera. "Mit eine Porsche, es ist 'Auspuff Sport?"

"Ich verstehe," he said. He got it. He was clearly a car guy. "Nein, das ist ein Sport Auspuff."

Congratulations to all you Sport Auspuffs out there. My (soon to be delivered) C2S has it. Can't wait to puff it (say "poof" it).

Unlike French or Spanish, German adjectives come before the noun as in English. Now if they could just put the verb in the right place, understanding simple German would be simple.

And in the right place the Germans would the verb put why?

Less like Yoda sound they would.

I actually asked him that! I thought it was a playful construction at first. It sure sounds likes it means "out-poof," and since it describes the item that handles hot exhaust gasses coming from the rear of a vehicle, for a second I thought I might have scored a linguistic coup and discovered the German root word for fart.

Again, after some bad German and pantomiming (and confirmation of spelling with Google Translate), they say "Furz." Which is pronounced "ferts."

So no, there is no "Sports Farts" exhaust option. Maybe that's what the ventilated seats are for.

Actually Ryan, as far as I understand "Ausfahrt" means exit. Which would make it a pretty good candidate for "fart." But I think the correct word for that is Furz.

That there is a publication called Auspuff makes me smile. That I didn't know about it makes me feel aus of it.
