So freaking excited that the next GT3 will have a 4.0L engine and optional 6 speed MT!! The market has spoken and Porsche has wisely listened. 991.1 GT3 and R pricing will finally settle down. And yours truly will start thinking about a track mate to keep his 991.1 GTS Targa company in the stable.
'Tis superb news. I know the GT3/R/RS forum will have a vibrant thread on this subject. Thought it might be nice to have a separate dialogue for our gang as well since we may differ from their POV at times

Nice! Again, hoping all this is true.
"Every now and then, Porsche decides to do something that makes hardcore enthusiasts balk. First, the brand switched from air-cooled to water-cooled engines in the 911, and more recently, moved from natural aspiration to turbos in many of its latest models. But it seems this time around, Porsche is listening to the die-hards. According to the latest rumors, the new 911 GT3 is set to get a big-displacement, naturally aspirated motor and the option of a six speed manual.
Autocar got a chance to talk to an inside source at Porsche, who spilled some details on the upcoming refresh of the 991-generation 911 GT3. According to the source, the new GT3 will receive a new 4.0-liter flat six engine, different from the one found in the current GT3 RS and 911 R. This coincides with what we heard at the LA Auto Show back in November, when Dr. Frank Walliser, head of Porsche Motorsport and GT cars, told R&T the new engine would instead be sourced from Porsche's 911 RSR race car.
Autocar's source says the main development work is focused on durability, claiming the motor "has done thousands of kilometers, absolutely flat out, with no problems at all."
The source also claims the 2017 GT3 will come with a choice between a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual clutch PDK transmissions, a first for the GT3. We've known a manual version was coming for awhile now, and this news is reassurance you'll be seeing them on the street soon enough. Provided that it's a really wealthy street."

manual coming was well established
4.0 is a bit of a surprise
so what do we know about this 'different' engine from the rsr race car and how does it differ from the modded 9a1 in the current gt3/rs?

Think the major 'difference' is that it shouldn't explode. Porsche dropped to #2 on Initial Quality (behind Kia!). The new engine should put them back on top

I predict a ton of used 991.1 GT3 to start hitting the market. This newly proposed 991.2 GT3 is the car they really wanted 3 years ago.

I am not sure about this. I intend to keep my .1 GT3 even though I am taking delivery of a .2 GT3 in July because I fully expect the .1 GT3 to go down in history as the only NA F6 engine from Porsche that revs to 9000 rpm. As such it will be a collectors item.

Agree, a major reason why I sold my 15 back to the dealer was the very questionable long term reliability of the engine. Expect 4.0L, 495HP, but no 9K redline for the .2GT3. Although I have a "promised" allocation for the .2GT3 I've been so satisfied w/ my .2 C2S I may not bother to sign up for the .2 GT3. Many will disagree but I believe when the numbers are tallied in a few years the total takers for the MT will be surprisingly few.
