It would be great to see a cheaper 991/911 with the flat - 4 turbo from the boxster S. It probably won't happen but would be cool.

Why do you think a 912 would be more successful than the original (which wasn't successful).
The 912 was meant to be an entry level Porsche until the 914 came out and then again 6 years later for one more year until the 924 came out.
We already have the entry level Porsches. 718.

911 was only a few years old when the 912 was around. After 50 years in production it has become iconic with the flat six. Porsche wouldn't compromise that status with a 912 model. As sub said, the 718 boxster/cayman fill the entry level quite nicely now.

The 4 banger 718 isn't going over well already. A 4 banger base model 991.2 was considered by PAG, but the lynch mob got word of it and they quickly shelved that idea. The S, etc would have stayed a Flat 6.
Leave the 4 bangers for the base Macans. The sports cars shouldn't have them.
Nothing wrong with a lightweight powerful model. That's what they did with the 911R. We've already discussed that subject to death.

The 4-banger S is already very close to a 991.2 base engine... Not sure there's enough differentiation for marketing folks. If it sold I'm not sure it would resell... What price ? above a cayman and under a base? 70-80? Would anyone pay that for a 4 banger ?
Have you driven it? It's torquey but if a 911 sounded like that Porsche would lose 90% of their fans. Maybe not their sales, but the aficionados would run... I can live with it on a cayman because you don't hear it as much. On the boxster it sounded sad....on a 911, no, no no....
Incidentally I've owned 2x 912s as recently as last year, sold them at the top of the market and together they bought me a 991.1 ;-) So that's where I stand on the topic. Lovely cars, fun to drive <60 mph. At some point I wanted horsepower though..

It would actually make sense to release one so they can continue to keep the 911 body style out longer. The younger generation of Porsche fans would probably buy into a turbo flat 4 712.

The original 912 was very popular and did outsell the early 911. Those were very different times. The advantage of the 912 was less weight in the rear of a very short wheelbase 911 making for a more predictable handling car at substantially less cost. That would be very difficult to achieve with the 991 platform.

Yep there is the "CPO" and it is good enough.
Making more cheaper models just dilutes the brand.
Look at BMW - They have 1 to 8 series well now it is 2-8 series. is 4 series really needed?
