Thanks. I assume you can do this by just pulling the plugs and scoping it?

Mine doesn't do this but I'd like to cover all my bases before the warranty expires if I keep it.

I don't mind the "pay to play" aspect of it, or even a 5 figure engine...but not with 5 figures of miles on it

According to Car and Driver, 991.2 engines have 150-micron thick plasma-sprayed iron cylinder bore surfaces that are more durable than earlier Nikasil or Locasil surfaces . Perhaps this change was at least partially intended to eliminate scoring, even if it may have been infrequent.

Really pisses me off when someone posts a problem and we take our time to respond and they disappear. I think I am going to take the Plenum approach, provide factual responses, if that can't be had, then go silent.

Sorry I just opened the thread now to post an update. I didn't mean to disappear. For some reason I didn't receive a notification for new post on 10th January. It is of everyone interest to share experience.

Just before Christmas I took the car to Porsche for the 2nd time and the sound was clear this time. They lifted the car on the ramp and listened with the stethoscope and said they need to have the car for a couple of days. We agreed for next Wednesday. Keep finger crossed

rkwfxd, I wonder if you have any update about your car. You mentioned you are taking it for a service this month.

Just a wee update:

Dropped the the car to the dealer last Wed. They recorded the noise and sent the audio file to Stuttgart. Haven't heard back yet.

Question, how old is your fuel?

Also, old oil causing sticky lifters sounds more like:

My car has recently developed similar sound bit when it's moving forward and backwarc in slow speed, how do you fix that?

Hello all,

Just a wee update: Dealer asked to have the car back to their workshop. Dropped the car last Wednesday. They drained the oil and found metal particles. Oil sent it for analysis. The report came back showing metal swarf. next step they will remove the sum and have a look. Things are progressing slowly but I have a feel things are not assuring. Not sure how this will end and how will affect resale value of the car.

- LTP: Hope yours is something minor but keep us updated please

- rkwfxd: Still didn't hear back about your issue. what was the outcome please?

- I still don't receive email notification for new replies to this thread (the relevant box is ticked). Any suggestion how can this be fixed please.

Based on this update, they'll be putting in a new crate motor. Fully documented, it won't adversely effect value, might even be worth more to some buyers. Ask them to CPO the car as compensation for concern about perceived value loss, and for loss of use. Properly break in the new motor and enjoy.

But me repeating myself, I looked after this engine (did brake in gentle driving for 1500 miles, waited till rpm drops down before driving, rpm less than 3000 till engine temp reached, never redlined, never launch controlled or tracked).

I feel I lost confident in these engines. Porsche has a long standing design fault started since they moved to water cooled engine. At the start we thought it only involved 996/997.1. Then now a growing number of 997.2 facing the same issue. And here we go 991.1 joined the club.

You did nothing wrong. Stuff breaks. That's what your warranty is for. We've seen very few issues with the 991. And very few engine failures on the 9A1 motor. Keep faith. Negotiate the CPO. Be persistent and professional. Good luck.

These engines are plug & play.
