Hey,

On the surface it seems super simple that centerlock technically has one "nut" to lock and unlock and quick replacement of the wheel.

We all know this is not the case but after watching this video I never realized that so many annoying things one has to do just to change a tire. Press brakes inside etc.

This video is about rotor change but in the middle these guys do reinstall the wheel and boy! what a crazy process.

Having a flat tire on the road and this whole process goes out of the window.

Best solution get 5 lug nut tires unless you are racing on track (then maybe CL wheels).

Yeah CL wheels look nice but the install/reinstall procedure is super crazy why?

Has anyone changed CL tires on the road when having a flat?

You may not have noticed this, but check your trunk. There's no spare tire up there. So it wouldn't matter if they attached the wheels with quick release bicycle wheel spindles, you're not going to find it very easy to repair a flat in the field.

Unless...

...you invest 40 bucks in a good plug kit and learn to use it. I carry the ARB kit in my Carrrera and haven't had to use it yet. But I'm so good with it on Jeep tires that when off-roading if I get a flat, I usually don't bother to switch to the spare because I can plug the hole much faster than I can swap to the spare.

To your point: IF we had a spare tire that would work on either front or rear, and IF there was a chance in hell of finding a 325/30-20 MPSS at a tire shop in the north Georgia mountains, I'd have thought long and hard about 5-lugs. But since neither is true, I'm happy to have the very cool looking CLs. Only had to pull them off once, to paint them silver, and it was a minor PIA in my garage, but not really daunting.

I love the look of CL & plan to purchase them again if available.

I often wished that someone from Porsche Engineering would walk over to Porsche Marketing and shoot the idiot that thought CLs were a good idea squarely between the eyes.

I love my CL's. Had them on my 997 GTS as well. Never had an issue with them on either car. As others have stated, they look great and add some distinction to the GTS over a regular Carrera.

If you attend a few DE's each year and change from street to track pads for each event, in addition to bleeding and changing brake fluid, you'll soon see the folly of CL wheels. For me, the PITA factor began to surpass the fun factor, and I quit running DE's after 20+ years of running my 911's.

I love my centerllocks too! The StopnGo kit has worked perfectly for me on motorcycles, other cars and once on my GTS.

Guess you have never seen one detonate on the track. If you ever have seen a 911 lose a wheel at 130+, trust me you would never drive a CL.

Really? Wonder why GT3 and GT3 RS, the more track focused porsches are CL too, porsche must really be stupid.

Actually, with the iron brakes that whole job did not look too bad at all. Only real negative on the CL in the video is that installing it is a two person job since someone has to push on the brake pedal while you torque it.

I saw someone in a late-model Mustang lose a wheel 15 years ago on Turn 6 at Road Atlanta. It was a 5 lug wheel. If you had seen that, brotha, you'd never track a car with 5 lug wheels. [/condescending voice off]
