Default Beetle and 911

Just a couple of photos for fun. I was discussing with a friend about how the 911 design is an evolution, pragmatic, and purposeful. And then we talked about the Beetle, also designed in the same manner. How can you not love both?

I've owned this '71 for 20 years.

Was the first major restoration project car I did with my youngest son. In 2012 from this...

Now he's doing his own BMW.

Beautiful! That's a great talent to pass down to your son. You should check out eBay for 911's needing restoration. Some guy has about 10 of them listed.

My post prompted me to go to eBay and look for Beetles. Check this one out:

Thanks Dan. The BMW E30 325e I bought last month will keep my wallet and my son busy for a while. After diving into drivetrain/suspension work immediately after the purchase, I've already spent more in restoration parts than what I paid for the car itself. As you can imagine, one has to be quite committed (and maybe a bit nuts) to do off pan/car restoration. Amazing the price of these old cars though, huh? $23K for a restored '66. Wow. Restored P Car prices are absolutely through the roof.

Default My Beetle

Ha! I had a 1953 bug, drove back to Arkansas from North Carolina in 1971. I was in the slow lane on some of the hills, and still had trouble staying ahead of the semi’s. Loved the bug! Bought a new beetle in 2013, TDI. Traded it for a new TDI Golf. Malone tuned it in Denton Tx. Sold it back on the diesel gate, and bought a 2016 new Golf R. Had it tuned APR stage 1. Pass about anything on the road. I have a 1986 Carrera, and I got the bug for a Cayenne.

Original bugs are ok, but the newer ones, can’t get more feminine than that. I’m sorry, nothing appealing about them.

Aside from the look, mechanicals completely different. Original bugs had flat/boxer 4 cylinder air cooled rear engine, rear wheel drive, same in principle as early 911 minus 2 cylinders, kind of a poor cousin. Newer ones have the usual standard FWD front engine 4 cylinder set up, like any other car on the road.

That looks bad ***. The original older bugs are cool. Our cars are basically stretched versions of those lol

Look at that center exhaust "a la GT3"

Beetles are Genesis to me, they have my respect and admiration.
