Pretty clear to me that the 991 went 3 liter turbo to sell to China.

Yes I believe that to be true. I read that they sell more 911s in china than in the U.S.
Plus, they have to meet restrictions in the U.S. and europe.
In general they were just forced to go that route.

I'm sort of baffled by the Cayenne/991 comparisons. One's a massive SUV and ones a gt/sports car. These couldn't be less similar.

Agree, however, if one is discussing around town grunt and ease of driving, it is probably a relevant comparison, at least in that context.
